Re: Pre surgery breakdown

Heather-if you are having a regular cath then it's not usually a big deal. Most of the time they put it in after you are out. Mine wasn't uncomfortable and I was glad I didn't have to get up to pee. And you will need to pee a lot. If you do have discomfort, just tell the nurse, sometimes they need to be adjusted. Removal feels strange but didn't hurt.

If you wake up in pain you need to tell the nurse so they can make sure you have the right meds. I was not in pain when I woke up, just a little confused, very sleepy and my mouth was dry so I asked for ice chips. I spent about 1 hour in recovery and the only thing I remember is asking for ice chips a few times and sleeping.

They put me on a pain pump. That first afternoon I used it several times. For some reason I woke up pretty early the next morning (I think I was just slept out) and the nurse said I'd hardly used it during the night. I'm not saying that I never hurt but most of my pain was no more than my period pain was. It's just a little more scary because you keep wondering if something is wrong vs groaning its your period again.

I have only taken half a percocet since my first week. Other than that I have taken ibuprofen, first the prescription and now otc.

I kept my ovaries so can't tell you about hormones.

All the scary thoughts before surgery are normal. No matter how ready you are for the surgery there are so many what ifs. You will be fine.

Re: Pre surgery breakdown

NOBODY was as scared as I was!! I cried and cried and cried before my TAH. It was ALOT easier than you think!! The worst part for me was being so tired. The pain was not as bad as I thought at all. Wal Mart did me in! One trip to Wal Mart the first few weeks and I was asleep on the couch for the rest of the day. Avoid Wal Mart! LOL! I ran a fever the first few days and I had a hard time coming off the Morphine, but all in all I did really well. I have had a few months of hot flashes, but they are going away now. Everything will be fine..best thing I EVER did!!

Re: Pre surgery breakdown

We all go through the pre-surgery breakdown. You are not alone. Just picture yourself past this, better than ever. Day by day, minute by minute, the best way to live it.

I was completely terrified. It is true, the waiting is the hardest part. But once you're through, the relief is wonderful. I woke in recovery groggy but feeling no pain. The day after was a little rough, but the staff was on top of my pain management.

There were unexpected (not horrible) minor hurdles along the way, but taken one at a time, it wasn't too bad. Get up and walk as soon as you're allowed. It will jumpstart the healing and help everything get rolling again, and may even shave time off your hospital stay, it did for me.

Best of luck to you!

Re: Pre surgery breakdown

Ditto, except that I had to use the pain meds. It wasn't unbearable, but it was enough that I wanted to take the edge off.

Also, I spent a LOT of time before being scared and crying about EVERYTHING! I was surprised that afterward I only broke down twice. Once was in the first week and I had missed a pain med dose and was sore and feeling sorry for myself. The second was around week 4 or so when I was DONE with the recovery, but still wasn't feeling well (again, feeling sorry for myself).

You'll do just fine. (I KNOW it doesn't help that much to hear it, but it really will be okay!)

Re: Pre surgery breakdown

Moment by moment and breath by breath you will get through this. My date is the 19th. I am trying to remind myself of all the reasons I am moving forward on this when I am second guessing myself. My last period was reminder enough. The panic is normal. I am trying to focus on things that come after the surgery and keeping busy. Know you are not alone.
