Question about Abdominal Excercise

So I am 7 weeks post op and my doctor has cleared me to resume excercise again. He just cautioned to start out slow and work my way up. I am just curious about doing abdominal exercises and if anyone has had any post op experience with this. How much is too much and how soon is too soon? If I attempt to do a handful of sit ups each day to help tighten my belly muscles, is it going to be too hard on my internal healing? Will I experience any set backs? I am really curious to know if any sisters have been attempting abdominal crunches and what the outcome was?? Thanks!

Re: Question about Abdominal Excercise

My doc cleared me at 6 weeks.

I'm 5 months post op and YET to do any ab work. I even quit working out 4 weeks ago because it caused me internal discomfort. I kept doing it because my doc told me it was ok, just go slow. piff, I wish I had just layed on my butt for the last 4 months. I've just now gotten to the point where it doesn't hurt, heaviness or feel strain internally when I lay back or sit straight up. I don't plan to do any ab work for at least another 2-4 months. It just puts way too much stress on those newly stitched ligaments.

I don't care what any doc says, 7 weeks post op is way too early to do any ab work, IMO.

Re: Question about Abdominal Excercise

That is kind of what I was afraid of. Dang! I am not a huge fan of working out. It's just that at some point I'd like to be able to button a pair of jeans again without pain. I did buy some stetchy jeans but I can't wear the same pants everyday. LOL!

Re: Question about Abdominal Excercise

Ever since surgery, I've done a lot of treadmill walk with incline and also exercise bike. Last week (week 7) I was cleared for any exercise, so I began weight training (upper body) at moderate level and today I went on the stairmaster for the first time (45 min., medium level). So far so good, but I don't think I'm ready for Ab workout just yet. I'm going to wait till week 10, or possibly week 12 to start working the abs.

I'm OK still wearing larger size pants for now. At least I know my cardio is helping as well as trying to watch what I eat.

Re: Question about Abdominal Excercise

I am going to have to wait for a bit to do any type of cardio because my immune system was shot after back to back surgeries so I have been sick non-stop since before Christmas. The weights might be a good idea until I can breathe well enough to do other types of excercise.

Re: Question about Abdominal Excercise

Everyone is different, so you really should check with your doctor. My doctor told me that my abdominal muscles were almost disintegrated in one section (from scar tissue from previous surgeries). He said he doesn't even want me to suck in my stomach until 6 months after the surgery date. He said no sit-ups or crunches for one year. At that point, he wants me to do sit-ups to try to strengthen my weakened muscles.

Re: Question about Abdominal Excercise

Oh Janie, I am so sorry. That doesn't sound too pleasant at all, but I am glad that your doctor has given you careful advice.

CrazyDaizy, I'm with Keltec on this one. I was a 100-crunches/sit-ups a day gal prior to surgery, and my specialist told me to go right back into my routines at 6 weeks post-op. I waited until 8 weeks, felt great, over-did things, and haven't gone back to 100 yet, and don't plan to until maybe 5 months. We do use our ab muscles in so many other activities as is (I sing too), and the focused/concentrated work is maybe just a bit too much.

Re: Question about Abdominal Excercise

There are some guidelines here in the 5/6 week recovery guide. My trainer says no crunches for awhile. When I am cleared I will start with short planks and hip raises. I will also be back in the vortex pool, great for core muscles, and a little easy yoga.

Check with your Dr before doing anything. Your surgery and your incision(s) will make a difference in what you can do.

Thanks all. This is not what I wanted to hear, but also what I was afraid I might hear. I'll hold off for a while :/
