Back to work and back to swelly belly

Last Friday was 4 weeks for me and time for this princess to return to work. I expected to be tired, but I did not expect swelly belly. Before work I was back into my jeans and other button up pants, but now that I'm back at work I am back in stretchy pants. At 4 1/2 weeks shouldn't that be gone?

Re: Back to work and back to swelly belly

I'm now at 6 weeks, and my belly still swells if I have been on my feet too much during the day. I go back to work Monday, and that will mean all day on my feet and more than 4000 steps (over 2 miles) of walking. I expect that I will be quite large.

My doctor told me today that the 6 week mark only means that you have healed to the point where, if you feel pain, you are unlikely to be causing damage. It is many months before the internal healing is complete - up to 12 months - so be gentle with yourself during the recovery (the first few weeks) and healing (the next few months).

Re: Back to work and back to swelly belly

I'm 7 weeks post-op. I was able to zip/button my pants when I left for work yesterday but by afternoon I had them unbuttoned and unzipped. Thankfully I had a long sweater to hide it! Went out and bought some stretchy pants for work.

Re: Back to work and back to swelly belly

From what I've read - and believe me, I've read every thread on swelly belly for the last 2 months! - this can last for 4-5 months or longer.
I am at 4+ months, and although I THINK it is improving, and my vertical incision is no longer sore for wearing zips over it, I still can get really swollen. For no reason I can even fathom, like a day sitting down at work????????

Gee, am I sick of this!! I have had to buy quite a few new clothes for work. Like many of us, I wake up with a flattish abdomen and I'm 3-5 months pregnant by the end of the day.

As I'm well along into the healing process, I'm doing some abdomen muscle tightening exercises every day - the sort of thing you can do while sitting at your desk at work. I do think these are helping, even though it isn't fat causing the swelly belly. I'm also back into the up-hill walking I used to do pre-op. I feel terrific - just hating the swelly belly!

But you have to be careful at the earlier stages, and exercise makes it worse.

Re: Back to work and back to swelly belly

Same thing happened to me. The scales say I'm 5 lbs lighter than pre-op, but my clothes sure don't show it! I have found that it's worse at the end of the day (too much standing, walking, etc). It's so strange to look pretty much normal on the outside, when there's still so much healing go on the inside. I guess swelly belly is just nature's way of reminding us we're not quite healed yet.

Re: Back to work and back to swelly belly

I am so glad to hear I'm not the only one with "swelly belly " !!!! I had to go out and buy jogging pants in the next size , because everything hurt to touch my belly.I am 4 wks post op I had a tvh and thought that it was weird that the scale says I have lost weight and still I hurt to wear my "regular" jogging pants.

Re: Back to work and back to swelly belly

I asked about this today at the doctor and he said it will take a few months to return to "normal".
