All I can say is yikes! My MIL is also "abrupt and outspoken", they are only ten minutes away from us, however gratefully they give us ALOT of space...she called me about ten days post-op to check in and said some prayers on my behalf but that was all. She sounds terribly overbearing! She gave an explanation for her prior behaviour but did she apologize to you for disrespecting you? If she insists on "being there" (which I believe to be more about her life needing a purpose rather than being supportive to you) then your DH needs to grow a pair! Might sound rude, just saying....

You could always try putting her in a packing case on the next plane out of the base, marked Fragile!!

Too darn funny!!! Let your husband deal with her. If she is a big pain, tell him she needs to leave. He needs to stand up to her. It can be tough but maybe she can help with the kids. Hope it comes together.
