10 days pre-op and wondering...

if anyone is concerned about missing having a monthly period, just a tiny bit? I am 98% excited to not have one anymore, but there is that small 2% of having a monthly cleanse and rebirth that I am afraid I will miss slightly. Has anyone experienced this?

My life has been ruled by my cycle for so many years and though I am mostly looking forward to NOT having that, I wonder if it will feel like something is "oh, I'll start that exercise plan after my next periods done" or "lets plan that weekend away in the middle of my cycle when I'm post flow, pre PMS and feeling best."

Just wondering...pls advise...thanks!

Re: 10 days pre-op and wondering...

My periods were always so miserable that I have been looking forward for years to having them finish for good. It was 21 years ago that a hysterectomy was first discussed as a possible solution, so it's been at least that long that I feel like I suffered through the monthlies. When they became twice monthly and I spent over half my life menstruating, I was able to look even more forward to the end. However, part of the reason I didn't have the hysterectomy all those years ago was because of the need to hang on to something for which I didn't even have words. You may feel some grief after the surgery; I hope you will also seek out support, if that does happen for you.

Re: 10 days pre-op and wondering...

I am 3 months post and it feels a little weird not to have them.
I was having periods 2 times a month but during one of those times my daughter was on her cycle too. It has been a bit strange to buy supplies for her and not for me. Also I took a trip last week and when I was packing I had to remove all the tampons and pads form my bags. That was weird. First time traveling without a pad on (just in case) in years.
I can not say that I miss it but I do feel a little lost not having it to judge my months by. Also I have not got rid of my tampons yet. My daughter does not use them and I have no reason to hang onto to them but I have not thrown them away. I can understand how you feel...

Re: 10 days pre-op and wondering...

Hi! I am only 3 weeks post op but I gotta say I don't think I am going to miss them at all! I had such HEAVY periods for close to 7 years that it ruled my life. I did everything and planned everything around that time of the month. Then it picked up to twice a month and that put a stop to anything fun. I was anemic and so tired all the time. I am looking forward to go and doing stuff without having to worry about starting while there, looking forward to wear a different color of pant other then black just in case etc.... now that is not to say that it won't hit me later but right now I am happy that I will have no more periods!

Re: 10 days pre-op and wondering...

I am in the camp of missing them - and it is weird not having them. I miss the cycle, and the cleansing feeling I would get afterwards, even though they were annoying and could get in the way at times. I never had really bad periods, but they were heavier than normal. I do feel less feminine.

It is okay to miss this part of your life. It was with you so long, and when it is gone it forces you into a new normal. It will take you sometime to get you used to it.

(((Hugs))) to you..

Re: 10 days pre-op and wondering...

I really don't think I will miss being miserable 3 out 4 weeks every month. Especially considering I bled nonstop from march 2011 through sept 2011. Until the Lupron took over. If it wasn't for the allergic reaction to Lupron I would've stayed on it. Now I'm anxiously awaiting my hysterectomy.

I'm with marestail on this one. I do miss my periods. They were always light and short and no trouble to me. They were part of being a woman and I feel less feminine also. It made me sad to throw out my period panties and give away my pads. I'm out of the club now.

Re: 10 days pre-op and wondering...

Don't miss them one bit - mine were so irregular, heavy and miserable I eagerly anticipated the end. I'm still not used to them being gone and tend to check for bleeding then find myself relieved when there's nothing. I'm sure this feeling will fade soon.

Re: 10 days pre-op and wondering...

Thanks for all the seems that it really depended on why you got a hysterectomy if you miss your periods at all...

I have prolapse, which is why I am getting my uterus removed, so my periods certainly have't been as bad as some women's, though not totally insignificant either.
I think I will mostly like NOT having them, though I also think I will miss that monthly cleanse, but maybe will just have to find other ways to honor that.

Re: 10 days pre-op and wondering...

I do not miss it one bit! It was so heavy, long and unpredictable and I carried tampons and pads all the time. I held on to the pads and tampons after the surgery and when I felt mentally ready to get rid of them, I had 2 very large trash bags full of the angd gave it to my sister. It looked like the feminine hygeine section of a store! I am still finding them in every single purse and tote bag! lol
