Re: 10 days pre-op and wondering...

I dont know about monthly cleanse... I felt dirty and disgusted every time I was on my period. I have maybe one week of no PMS symptoms a month and was going through a box of 36 Ultra tampons and at least 10 overnight pads. I say good riddance.

Re: 10 days pre-op and wondering...

I am 5 weeks post op and my forst non period was great. No excrutiating cramps to keep me up at night...it was great. The reason I had my hysterectomy was that it got to hte point that if I lifted something a little heavy I would start bleeding. It really interupted my life and made mine and my husbands sex life revolve around that. If we had sex I usually bled until I started my period. If I cleaned the house and pulled the couch out to vaccuum...I started bleeding. I couldn't take it anymore, so I say so long "Flo" and all the misery you brought.

Re: 10 days pre-op and wondering...

It really does depend on why you had your hysterectomy. It would make sense for those ladies who had miserable periods, and that is why they are having a hysterectomy, that they would not miss them. Those whose periods were not as bad would miss them. Either missing them or not missing them is a very personal reaction, and neither is wrong. We all support each other in what ever reaction we have. That is what so neat about this site.

One thing I wish I would have done with all of my feminine products is contribute them to a battered women's shelter. I did not even hear about the idea until after I threw mine away (it actually took me a few months before I could bring myself to dispose of them.) Anyway, it is something to consider and a way to give to other women who really need help.

I put all my pads in a pretty gift bag and gave it to my good friend after my surgery. She thought it was a present and when she opened it her and I laughed.

Re: 10 days pre-op and wondering...

I read this and thought "are you crazy?!? Miss my period? No way" but as I right this post, my stashes of pads and tampons are still in place. Clearly, I'll never need them; I just haven't come to that place where I can let go of them. It sounds nuts I know. My periods were hellacious -heavy, clotting, painful, 18-20 days long-I am beyond glad that they are gone but I completely understand the odd sort of comfort they provided; kind of a stabilizing thing for me. I could always count on my period interfering with my life. Now I have no reason to put off my life. It's a tiny bit scary actually......

I feel like my "clock" is all messed up. In some respects I judged the passing of time with my periods. And I keep looking for it every time I go to the bathroom. It was part of being a girl.

Re: 10 days pre-op and wondering...

It took me some time before I could bring myself to get rid of my tampons and pads. They are such a sign of womanhood, something we all had and needed since we were about 13 years old.

Keep them as long as you need to - they won't go bad. When you are ready to let go of them, you will know.

Re: 10 days pre-op and wondering...

Marestail, thanks for the post. That might be it-the periods, pads and tampons were such enormous part of our lives-it's just strange to wrap my head around the fact that they are gone forever.

Sugarandspice, yes! My clock is completely off as well. Towards the end of this journey when my periods came twice a month, I became very off kilter. After my hyster, I wore pads due to the post op discharge 10 days longer than I probably needed to just waiting for the bleeding to come back. I didn't realize that I would be dealing with so many odd feelings of loss. Thank God for this site.

That's very individual and I think it must depend on the type of procedure you have. I had an abdominal hysterectomy, and experienced "a hint of pink" on the first day, and absolutely nothing since.
