I had my TAH on december 7 and I was bleeding (would not stop for weeks and I didn't want to wait any longer). You should talk to your doctor but I think the only thing that could derail or postpone your surgery is if you are very anemic and weak or if the medication you are taking now would make the surgery risky. But your doctor will decide. Good luck ! Get well !

I was told that I was fine if I had my period on the day of surgery. I would call to make sure that the medication you are taking won't be a problem.

Re: period started and surgery in 3 days?

My Dr told me not to worry if i had my period the day of surgery. But you should call them and ask to be 100% sure. It would be interesting to try to schedule my surgery based on not bleeding. Since my periods have since August been lasting 8-9 weeks! A week was bad enough in the past, but now it seems relief may be a few days and then crazy long periods all over again.

Had mine a week ago, had surgery 2 days later -no worries about the bleeding . It wont stop them from operating . My doctor even let me take Motrin for the cramps ! Good luck !

Same here ... Auntie Flow - Out You Go! I had mine on the day of my surgery ... Why not wave good bye one last time? ;-) I had my surgery on a Tuesday but got my period on Saturday prior and was not even able to walk upright - what a great way to remind us that we need this surgery!

Re: period started and surgery in 3 days?

Me too!!! I just came to the site freaking out and saw your post. I too am scheduled for a TVH on 1/18 and started just now. I went 12 days without a period. Yuk. It really just confirms my decision to do it but it is soooo embarrasing. I also dont know what I can take for the awful cramps. Any suggestions anyone? Also, when do I need to stop tampons?

This website has been such a blessing.

Good luck to you and God bless.

Re: period started and surgery in 3 days?

I used products right until I had to go to 'the castle' aka hospital. I used tampons until I had my pre op shower @ home and then switched to a pad. They will give u a pad & the fancy hospital undies (if your hospital is like mine, you'll receive your very own 'fishnet' panties lol - actually, they are the comfiest, stretchiest things I've worn - maybe it was the drugs that convinced me LOL) once u are changed into your hospital appointing fashion wear.

Re pain, after surgery, there's lots of pain solutions. I was introduced to a mix of 800mg of Ibuprofen (2 extra strength Advil) & 1000mg of Acetometiphen (2 extra strength Tylenol) post op and it seemed to work wonders. I took oxycoten maybe 10x post op (in the first 2 weeks) but they cause constipation so I 1/2 mine. You'll know what your body needs. In the meantime, you might want to try the Advil/Tylenol combo (until you are suppose to stop eating & drinking).

Re: period started and surgery in 3 days?

Oh! And fear not, right after post op, there will be wonder drugs likely moriphine that will assist for the first while. Pain wise, there are amazing pain teams working @ hospital for post op situations like ours. The switch to Advil and tylenol was 'going home' strategy (combined with an as needed narcotic)

Re: period started and surgery in 3 days?

Ask your doctor what you can take for your cramps . I was so happy my doctor allowed Motrin up to 6 hrs before surgery .
