Question about Bowel Prep

Hey everyone! I am so happy that I found this site! I am having my surgery in 3 days (1/18) When I went for my pre-op appointment at the Dr and Hospital they said nothing about doing a bowel prep before surgery. So should I do one any ways?? I really not sure what to do.. Has anyone else not had to do a bowel prep??

Thank you for any help!

Re: Question about Bowel Prep

Please do not do a bowel prep unless your own DR has instructed you to do so. If you are not sure what to do, call your DR's office Monday morning and ask. What you do not want to happen is for your surgery to be cancelled because you arrive the morning of your procedure and they find out you either did a prep when you weren't instructed to or didn't do one and they meant to tell you to.

Good luck with your surgery!

Re: Question about Bowel Prep

my pre op information sheet instructed bowel prep; which I was concerned about because I've never given myself and enema. However, during my pre op visit with the Surgeon I voiced this concerned and she said it really didn't matter if I did it right or at all. I'm not sure if she was just confident in her abilities or if it really wasn't important that it be done.

Either way, I would check with the Surgeon. I did go through with it, not sure if I did it correctly but I didn't eat heavily the night before my surgery and I made sure to empty my bowels the morning of.

Re: Question about Bowel Prep

I did not have to do a bowel prep. It seems to be a DR choice as to do one or not. I absolutely agree with surferbabe; follow your DR's orders. I can't imagine having to cancel once you have gotten prepared for the surgery. Good luck!!!

My pre op sheet does not say anything about doing a bowel prep.. I will call in the morning and see if they want me to do one or not.

Re: Question about Bowel Prep

I was having laparoscopic surgery and my surgeon wanted a bowel prep done because he would not have enough visibility. My sister had an abdominal surgery and was not required to have a bowel prep

Re: Question about Bowel Prep

Lucky You! Seriously dont do it unless you are told to. You could call tomorrow morning (monday) just to make sure. My TLH is tomorrow @ 8am and I have just started Bowel Prep we will see how this goes I am staring at my bottle of Gatorade frowning as though its out to get me. Best of Luck!

Re: Question about Bowel Prep

I was just worried that they had forgot to tell me to do it.. I have bad internal hemorrhoids and have for over two years now and lucky me this is one of those weeks that they are bothering me and can seem to have a BM. Think it is just because I am starting to get really nervous about Wednesday. I am having laparoscopic surgery also. But yes I am going to call first thing in the morning! Good Luck tomorrow Brb!

Re: Question about Bowel Prep

You may not need one so double check with your doctor. I had to do a pretty thorough bowel prep but that was because there was suspicion of endometriosis on my bowel (which I did have). If you don't have to do it just be happy! I still can't look at a 64 oz bottle of gatorade without my stomach turning!

Re: Question about Bowel Prep

My surgery is also on 1/18 @ 8am and my sheet says to drink 8oz of Magnesium Citrate the night before surgery. I am scheduled to have TAH, both pelvic repairs as well as endo possibility. I have had to do the Mag-Cit before and it accomplished the job plus cleaned out my stomach as well because I threw up all night long.
I am both looking forward to the surgery and dreading it (if that makes any since). I have hurt for so long I look at this as being my saving grace after the pain from the surgery is gone. But I also know that my body reacts to pain w/ nausea and vomiting so I am a little concerned about that.
I go in for all the pre-op testing tomorrow and then will be in a motel overnight (hospital is 150 miles from home).

Good luck to you and all the others having surgery,
Michelle
