HRT - SAH/BSO Scheduled 1/23/12

Hi - I'm scheduled for surgery this coming Monday and have questions regarding HRT. I'm 40 and will be having both ovaries removed.

This decision has been a long time in the making so I'm completely ready for the surgery but haven't really thought about or researched the hormone issue.

What have others done/experienced? Has anyone used more natural or alternative methods for the hormone issues.

It seems silly I'm just thinking about this know. Anyone advice or info would be appreciated.

You're smart to ask about hormones prior to surgery. It's an important topic!

Be sure to discuss your hormone concerns with your doctor, especially since you are dealing with an endometriosis diagnosis. Hopefully your doctor has already explained that having a hysterectomy, with or without also having your ovaries removed (oophorectomy), isn't a cure for endometriosis. It's possible to continue to have problems with endometriosis even after surgery. Some doctors will withhold hormone therapy for a period of time after surgery, but some prescribe estrogen right away. Others will prescribe estrogen along with progesterone, because progesterone can help counteract the effects of estrogen. (Endometriosis feeds on estrogen.) Find out prior to surgery what your doctor's thoughts are for hormone therapy when endometriosis is involved.

There are plenty of hormone options, and you can explore what some of the estrogen choices are in the articles in this link: Hormone Jungle Articles.

Good luck to you!
