hillzy27!!

You are most certainly not alone! It is completely normal to feel nervous about your upcoming surgery.

Here are some helpful hints that you might remember for after your surgery..

1. Walk often...not long distances, just short walks several times a day. This helps keep your body from getting stiff and sore from laying around during your recovery. It is also good for preventing blood clots, and does wonders for gas pains and getting the bowels moving again.

2. Drink lots of water

3. rest when you need to

4. Follow your 's orders carefully and completely. Most of us had or have swelly belly, but it seems to get worse if you are doing more than you should be doing.

5. Ask your doctor about stool softeners and Gas X. They are going to be two of your best friends for the first few days after surgery.

6. Stay ahead of the pain. Don't wait until you hurt to take your pain medication. Take it on a schedule. You can start weeing yourself off of it when you feel that you don't need it anymore.

As far as pre-op things, you mentioned bowel prep. Make sure you ask your doctor if he/she requires you to do a bowel prep before surgery. Not all doctors do, and you should not do one without being instructed to do so by your doctor.

You are going to be just fine! Your nerves will get the best of you in the next few weeks, but that's normal. Just come here and lean on your sisters to get you through this part of the journey!

to you and here's hoping your surgery goes well and you have a speedy and uneventful recovery!!!

Re: nervous TAH 2/13/12

With 3 c-sections you will have no trouble making it through this. It all sounds worse when you are first learning! Think of it this way - the bowel prep is just one evening worth and then it is over! Ultra soft toilet paper will be your friend then and later

Traeleigh has given you excellent pointers. You probably have found the sub-forum on Pre-op called "Hints from Members". If not, look there as there are tons of tips. Some of the older posts have unique tips too, so read older posts too.

Re: nervous TAH 2/13/12

Hi eynow,
I had my TAH exactly two years ago this week and even though the first 6 weeks weren't comfortable; I am glad I did it.
Traleigh gave you some excellent pointers which I followed as well.....be sure you drink lots of fluids, try to walk a little bit since that is what gets the gases and other juices flowing.....sorry tmi.....
One thing I also did at night post surgery was use a pillow on my stomach when I slept which protected my stomach.
And speaking of the pillow be sure you bring it with you everywhere you go....it will protect your stomach from the seat belt in the car or just in general.
As far as pre op; I did the bowel cleanse with drinking miralax to cleanse out my body....it was not too fun but it helped cut down on the gasy feeling.
Good luck!
