REALLY appreciate my husband now

I know some of you are having a hard time post-op, between pain and unhelpful husbands, but I just have to give my husband a public pat on the back! Sure, he can be an insensitive pain in the butt at times, but he really rose to the occasion for this!

Since my daughter is away at college, I knew everything would fall to my husband and teenage son. From making a list of what to bring to the hospital to right now, 20 days post-op, he has chosen to be a part of this entire experience. And I never expected him to be so good!

First of all, he was the guy my doctor went to during the surgery to say, "I think she has colon cancer. I'm calling in a colon specialist." After many hours, the specialist told him it was NOT cancer, just a perforation, and I'd be fine. He sneaked into the recovery room to tell me all that before someone else did, or I heard the wrong thing and thought I DID have cancer.

He made me fruit juice and water sorbets for the three days in the hospital I was not allowed to eat (no, we didn't tell the nurses!), was always at my side in the hospital when I woke up or fell asleep, counted the days (five) until my hospital release, and has done everything since then, from drying me after a shower to asking each day what I'd like for lunch or dinner.

Yesterday we took a walk together, something he would NOT do when I begged him years ago, pregnant with our daughter. Each day he encourages me to do a little more (yesterday I actually put some laundry in the washing machine!), yet is also there to remind me to rest.

Today I slept until NOON(!!!) and he was simply thrilled I was getting such good rest. (He works in the evenings) I just can't say enough good things about him.

This surgery has turned my life, which was pretty lonely with my daughter gone and my son never home, into a new world as my husband has shown how important I am to him. It has strengthened my marriage in a way I thought was impossible!

I just wanted to vent, although in a positive way, to show how these surgeries can far surpass healing us physically. I still have the man I fell in love with 25 years ago, and I'm finally appreciating him!

REALLY appreciate my husband now

An impact such as major surgery can make a strong marriage stronger, and a weak marriage weaker. You are very blessed, Celeste, and it's nice to hear you express that. Perhaps the sisters who are having marital struggles with their hubbies since their hysts can use the opportunity to deal with their issues, which seem to be magnified at times like this. In the meantime, give your DH an appreciative pat on the back for me!

My very best to you...

REALLY appreciate my husband now

Celeste,

How great your dh sounds! We had surgery on the same day, and my poor hubby has really outdone himself as well. We have 3 young kids at home and he's been running like a mad man. He did take us and leave us at my mom's for a few days...he needed the rest!

All I can say is, thank God for men like ours!

I must brag on my DH too. I never knew he could be Mr. Mom. He has kept that a secret for almost 20 years. We too have become closer. If I get mad or agrivated at him now, I think back on how much he has done for me and I just can't stay mad. I used to worry what it would be like when the kids were grown and it was just the two of us again. Our kids are getting close to that time, it is a blessing to know it will be okay.

We are blessed.
