Getting out of Bed

I will soon be having a TAH/BSO (within two weeks. my surgery requires two surgeons I have seen one will see the other next week and they have to coordinate schedules). This will be my 6th open abdominal surgery and I still have not figured out a way to get out of bed that is not so painful! We have no night stands maybe that would help? I have tried having my husband pull me ,and woa, that was way worse. Basically I roll to my side, swing my legs over the bed (our bed is tall so they don't touch the ground), grit my teeth and set up.

Any suggestions?

Re: Getting out of Bed

Your method is sound - that's what I did, except my feet reached the floor. You might want to get a step tall enough to reach your feet so you don't have a drop to the floor. A step stool with a tall handle to grab might be ideal. This might be handy -link here. We have one for every day use and love it. Safety Step makes a really nice one that would be ideal, but pretty expensive - here. They also have great steps without handles, too.

If your husband or a friend is handy, a home made one could be fun.

Re: Getting out of Bed

Just take it slow and easy. Everyone develops her own method as you go. Something to grab onto is good.

We have a water bed, and I just slowly rolled over and got my legs under me. I then just slowly stood up, trying to have my legs do as much work as possible.

Re: Getting out of Bed

I put the ottoman from a chair next to the bed. The roll method worked well for me. Some pain will happen regardless.

Re: Getting out of Bed

Another trick that my surgeon's resident taught me was to take a deep breath before moving and letting it out as you are doing the movement. She told me you don't tighten up the stomach muscles when breathing out and the pain is so much less. I have suggested this to scores of ladies here and they all say it works including me! Hope this helps!

Getting out of Bed

Thanks Ladies! I have a step stool like in the first post. I will def try to blowing out technique. Sounds like the trick I use to survice the pirate ship @ the fair lol. deep breath going up, blow it out coming down. Don't know why it works but it does!
