Waiting making me insane.

Two weeks ago on a Thursday I started having left flank pain. Thought it was a bladder infection at worst. On the following Sunday night had such severe pelvis pain I actually considered a trip to the ER. Instead went to my PCP the next day. A UA, Pap, and vaginal ultrasound the same day was told I have a mass the size of a grapefruit on one ovary, a smaller one on the other. One a complex mass and was referred to a gyn-onc. Saw the gyn-onc last monday, a hyster sched for Fed. 14. Yes valentines day. Had a CA125 done, and a CT on thursday. My preop appt with the doc is not until Jan. 30. The waiting is making me insane. The doc said he wont call me with any results but prefers a face to face to review any results. My CT results I know are ready already. Am I crazy to be worried? Two weeks ago I thought I was very healthy.

Re: Waiting making me insane.

Waiting can do that.

You were referred to a cancer specialist and a hyster has been scheduled before all the results are in, so no, I don't think you are crazy to be worried. I would be worried, too. The hard part is to avoid letting the worry get the better of you - something I haven't mastered.

By the way - Welcome to HysterSisters! There are a lot of great women here who are glad to share experience, advice and to just be there for support. Come back anytime and post as much as you want.

Best Wishes.

Re: Waiting making me insane.

Okay, sweetie. Deep breath. Take this one step at a time. The CA125 test is not diagnostic, meaning that if if comes back elevated it does not mean you have cancer. Benign tumors can release the same proteins that this test keys on.

I also had a complex cyst on my left ovary- the size of a very large great fruit (12 x 9 x 11 cm). I also had numerous uterine fibroids. I had a CA125 blood test that came back normal and an OVA1 blood test that came back elevated. They did an ultrasound and an MRI. My surgeon was a gyn onc. The pathology was done while I was in the OR. It came back benign for all tissues, thankfully. But, had it come back cancerous my gyn onc could have done the required further tests and exploration.

I am glad to see that you are in good hands of a gyn onc surgeon. IMHO that is the best specialty for this type of medical issue. I know it is hard not to do, but don't get ahead of your diagnosis. Keep taking deep breaths, and post frequently. I really understand where you are right now. I was there just in April of last year.

The women on this site are here to support you.

Keep us posted as to the results of your tests.

Re: Waiting making me insane.

I sure understand why you are feeling so freaked out. To go from feeling like everything is normal to facing a barrage of medical tests is pretty unreal. And, when those tests are screening for really scary diseases, that's even worse because now you are also thinking about all of the "what ifs". Please remember this part, too. In order to give you the best care, the doctors have to know what they are dealing with, and also what they are NOT dealing with. A lot of medicine is actually based on ruling out stuff, rather than ruling it in. When we have a medical test, we get scared that we might have something, but the doctors are often just making sure we don't have it.

The hardest part of waiting is that everything is possible, so you stress about everything. Once you get your diagnosis, you will deal with what is there. Like Marestail said, don't get ahead of the diagnosis. Take deep breaths and keep talking about what you need to stay OK until then.

Hugs and best wishes for you!

Re: Waiting making me insane.

The waiting is hard. The decision was made on Dec 22nd for me, and waiting for a month, hes been so hard to say the least! I think with all the issues i have had since then, i may skip into the OR!

You are not weird to be worried! I would be too. But worrying isn't going to change anything, but take away from your now.

I'm sorry your going through this! *hugs*

Re: Waiting making me insane.

As the other ladies said, just because they send you to a gyn oncologist and order tests, does not mean you have cancer. I think the waiting is the hardest. Last year they referred me to a cancer specialist for a sore in my mouth that wouldn't heal. I freaked until I went to see her which was two weeks from referral. Turned out it was nothing but rubbing on a sharp edge that wouldn't let it heal. But it can be scary. Try not to let your mind run away with you. And definitely don't go online to check it out. It can freak you out even more. Just keep taking deep breaths and try to stay busy. Sending hugs.

Re: Waiting making me insane.

I totally understand where you are. Waiting and worrying is also making me insane! I had a pelvic ultrasound and he found two dense masses in my uterus and cervix (2m). My da Vinci surgery is scheduled for Feb. 17th. I am terrified that I have cancer. I lost my mom to ovarian cancer in 2008 so I have a family history. My husband has been extremely supportive, but no-one can really understand unless you are going through this. That's why this web site is so great! I know it's hard, but try to stay calm and believe that everything will be ok. I'm trying too.

Re: Waiting making me insane.

Thanks all for the support. Waiting is getting better since the initial shock has worn off. Ive resisted the urge to pick up the radiology report for my scan and will wait for my preop meeting in a week. Im a nurse and my coworkers have been really supportive. This is a great forum, lots of good information. Its good to feel your not alone in how you feel.
