students in surgery.... let me think, NO!

So at my pre admission testing they asked me if students where here that day if i wouls be okay with them being in the OR. I wouls be OK if it was TAH, but assisted vaginally. NO WAY! Am i weird? I know nurses and all will be there, but i feel so uncomfortable thinking of a bunch of students looking at my, well vagina. Seeing how they do it there. I asked her to highlight my wishes to have NO students in the OR. Shesh!

Re: students in surgery.... let me think, NO!

You are not weird!! I wouldn't want some random students watching my surgery (and vaginal removal) either! My dr did have a 3rd year resident, whom I had met prior to surgery and with whom I felt comfortable, though.

I dont blame you in the least. I would have answered the same way. Having to face a hysterectomy is hard enough without having students in attendance.

Re: students in surgery.... let me think, NO!

I think I'm weird because I was all for it. I feel that as long as they aren't going the surgery, I'm cool with it. One day they might be my doctor! I'm happy to give them the opportunity to learn how to do it right.
lol, I'm that girl that tells them how to find my bits and pieces and how hard they can push on me.

Re: students in surgery.... let me think, NO!

I feel I've done my part. I've allowed many student exams and observations over the years, but I said no students or residents in the OR. There was one for my post op exam but I didn't want my Dr distracted in the OR by making explanations to someone. Just personal preference.

Re: students in surgery.... let me think, NO!

I get what your saying lorraine, and I do now that there will already be plenty of people in the OR. But for me, im uncomfortable enough as is, and feel comfortable with my current OBGYN. Hats off to you who are alright with students in the OR. But for me, it would already add to my nerves and uncomfortableness. I just personally cant imagine having students there. I feel my surgery is enough of a learning experience. The OBGYN assisting my surgeon is from India and has never performed or seen a LAVH. That dr has examed me. And its enough for me in the learning dept that she is assisting.

Re: students in surgery.... let me think, NO!

This brings me back to when I was in the delivery room , they asked if I minded students watching me give birth- I said no , they thought I meant no I don't mind but I meant no students. In any event they were there watching me scream .

Re: students in surgery.... let me think, NO!

This is a personal decision. For me, I would not have minded having students in the OR with me, as long as my doctor was the one doing the surgery.

Re: students in surgery.... let me think, NO!

As my daughter is a student radiographer, I would have been OK with students in the OR.
I allowed one to insert the needle for the anasthetic before I went under. She panicked a bit trying to follow the vein so the anethetist took over but that was OK. I told her not to worry about it.

I had an F2 in the operation and he did the follow up checks in the hospital.
He was very sweet and I gave him a hug before I left
