Pre-op appointment?

My hysterectomy is Monday, Jan. 30, and I was told I do not need to have a pre-op appointment because all pre-op will be done the day of my surgery. Is that normal? The hospital is supposed to call me tomorrow or Friday to give me details, but I'm nervous I'm missing something. I hate to keep bugging my doctor. I have no family, so I've joined the Hyster Sisters for guidance and support. Any advice?

Re: Pre-op appointment?

Hi MBroz!

You'll find a wealth of information and support here. It's amazing how much we all have in common and how different we all are at the same time! I didn't have a pre-op appointment either. I did have to go see my primary care physician to get a chest x-ray and maybe even some lab work, but did not go to the surgeon's office or hospital to get any kind of prep. They did all the shaving and vitals and ID bracelet stuff the morning of surgery at the hospital.

Write down your questions so you can ask when they call. They called me, too, and I forgot everything I wanted to ask. I was a bundle of nerves. Coming here to read others' experiences helped immensely, but since we are all different, it's best to get your answers from the nurse who calls pre op for your own personal directives.

I would also recommend writing down everything they tell you over the phone, too, because if you are anything like me, you may forget something important.

Some patients are required to do some kind of bowel prep before surgery. Some are not. That's one thing you don't want to stray outside of, because there are very specific reasons why they want you one way or the other. Some ask you to remove any nail polish. Some don't.

Get your list together. You may have more questions than you thought once you read through the forums here. I hope you will stay around and keep us posted on how things are going for you!

Re: Pre-op appointment?

I completely understan! I had my Biopsy on Monday and my doctor said see you in the OR. I don't have another appointment before then. Luckily he ha a website where I can email any questions and/or concerns. I would not worry about "bothering" the staff. They are there to answer your questions if need be. Good Luck and I hope you find The answers you need.

Re: Pre-op appointment?

I called my dr today to see if I needed to come back in and they called back and said yes tomorrow morning! My surgery is Tues. If it makes you feel better to have one more visit to be able to ask all those questions then call and ask if you can come in or have the dr call you. This is a major decision and you need to feel good about it. Take care!
