Re: My Robotic Hysterectomy is Scheduled for 2/3 & I need support!

I am 45 also and had daVinci on Dec 19. I am 6 weeks post op. My scars are almost gone, no swelly belly, love not thinking about tampons and scheduling vacations and sex around my period. Have not taken Advil since December. I used to take it 3 days before my period and 5 days during. I was off pain meds in one week and working out by Dec 31st. The worst night was the first night with the gas pains. I am glad I was in the hospital that night. The gas pains were awful even with pain meds. I wish I would have done it 4 years ago.

Re: My Robotic Hysterectomy is Scheduled for 2/3 & I need support!

I will be 3 weeks post-op tomorrow. I had Davince total hysterectomy.
CERVIX: I had lots of questions and concernns about his prior to surgery. A close friend of mine (who happens to be an OB/GYN) really encouraged me to have it removed. She herself had a total hysterectomy several months ago. She explained that is much more difficult to remove later if for some reason there is a problem. I have also read on these forums that since the cervix is an extension of the uterus, that you may continue to have a period each month. I don't know that for sure. I was concerned about sexual disfunction without a cervix. She assured me that there would be no problems. Plus, I had a 'bad' PAP about 8 years ago. It was a 'no brainer' for me to have my cervix removed.
BOWEL PREP: I had to do one Fleet's enema and a medicated douche the night before surgery.
SURGERY: Not sure what you meant be being inverted on the table. My procedure took a little over two hours. Immediate post-op pain in the recovery room was pretty rough, however, nothing that Demerol and Toradol couldn't handle.
I'll try to answer any other questions you have if you think of any.

Re: My Robotic Hysterectomy is Scheduled for 2/3 & I need support!

Once again a big THANK YOU to all the wonderful ladies for replying to all my posts!

I don't need to prepare my house because I'm moving in with my mother who's retired and lives in a two bedroom ranch-style condominium just down the street from my apartment. This way I won't have to worry about doing stairs and she'll be there to help me in any way I need. I also have many friends that have offered to come over and keep me company.

I've been slowly moving my "stuff" to her place, mostly books and magazines as well as comfy clothes and all my pain meds, Gas-X, stool softeners, bottled water, fresh organic fruits & veggies, etc.

I already had my left ovary removed in 2006 so this surgery is to just remove my uterus and cervix. Hopefully my right ovary will look good and she'll be able to leave it. I'm concerned about my endometriosis since there's no way of knowing in advance what it has attached itself to. Also, I'm worried about possible scar tissue from my previous surgery. Most of all, I'm worried about the large fibroids in my uterus since they're now the size of a 5 month fetus. Apparently, I'm worrying about quite a bit. LOL

I'm working hard to keep the faith that all will go well and I definitely find comfort knowing that there are many people praying for me. I'm pretty certain I've thought of everything I could possibly need to do in advance as well as have on hand after surgery.

If anyone wants to provide a list or mention the things that they found to be most helpful, I'm certainly open to more suggestions! (You ever have that nagging feeling that you might have forgotten something important?) I also updated my Will, Living Will and other estate planning documents, just in case.

Less than 3 days to go...

I am 45 also, with similar problems...my date is 2/21 and I too have to make the cervix decision...I'm leaning towards having it removed since my Dr. says there is a chance that I could still bleed if I don't....that's the MAIN reason I'm going through the hysterectomy anyway. I will be praying for you on the 3rd!! (((Hugs)))

Re: My Robotic Hysterectomy is Scheduled for 2/3 & I need support!

I should also mention that this has been a real emotional roller coaster for me because back in 2006 they thought I had ovarian cancer. I went to the doctor on Monday because I felt pressure and bloated, she sent me for an internal ultrasound on Wednesday and before I left I was told to call my GYN immediately. Apparently, my left ovary was 14 cm or the size of a grapefruit. They immediately ordered a slew of tests and on Friday I was told that I had to have emergency surgery on Saturday. My doctor at that time wanted to do a complete/total hysterectomy and I only had the night to decide. He was very aggressive and forceful but I decided, with the help of my friends, that I only wanted that ovary removed unless they found that I had cancer.

Needless to say, having all that happen in just one week was quite traumatic and I've been fighting to save my uterus for the past 5 years. As a matter of fact, the women that were by my side that fateful night coined the phrase "Protectors of the Uterus" and we've had a holiday party every December to celebrate.

Unfortunately, it seems that the time has finally come to have it removed to due all the things I said in my previous post (Endometriosis, Fibroids and did I mention that I've been bleeding for 25 days straight?!)

On one hand I feel a bit like a failure because I'm now having the surgery that I fought so hard to avoid. But, on the positive side, they now have new procedures and the Da Vinci machine which will supposedly make this less invasive, less painful, less blood loss and a quicker recovery. Last time they cut me wide open from my belly button down so I'm happy that it will only be a few small scars!

I know what you mean about the roller coaster and the bleeding....I've been bleeding/spotting for over a year now! UGH....I'm still waiting on results from my biopsy last wed...WHY does it take so long?? This is torture! I too have the long scar from the belly button all the way down so I'm happy to be getting the robotic hyst as well!

When you say comfoy clothes, I hope they are very loose ftting. Especially the first week, your belly will be swollen and will need a larger size than you usually wear.

Re: My Robotic Hysterectomy is Scheduled for 2/3 & I need support!

From this day forward know that what you are doing is the right thing for you now and it wasn't before. I had the Davinci on Jan. 5 and If I had had my hysterectomy 2 years ago (like I was told) I would have had the the abdominal surgery. I feel mostly great in less than 4 weeks. I do what I want and rest and am recovering well. Never had bleeding or any other complications (thankfully) Just rest and be thankful it is over. I was also the keeper of the uterus and now I let her go and I don't miss her. No looking back. Good luck and rest. and wear comfy pjs with a draw string and drink your water out of a straw next to your bed and make your kids (or husband or whoever is helping you) bring you lots! and a bell is nice too to summon... just saying!
