Re: My Robotic Hysterectomy is Scheduled for 2/3 & I need support!

JWaltersRN, I took Miralax before my Jan 6th surgery to keep on a regular BM schedule, it also helped clean me up somewhat before the actual surgery though my Dr does require intestinal cleansing before surgery. I was so happy I did because I had my first BM on day 3 and it was soft so I didn't have any issues with pain. I also didn't have major gas pains from the surgery itself. Therefore, I think pre-op prep with cleansing like you want to do is a great idea!

Scorp1159, thank you! I probably will, if nothing else to help alleviate that part of pre-op anxiety!

Re: My Robotic Hysterectomy is Scheduled for 2/3 & I need support!

That's probably not a bad idea, but be aware that there are 2 types of possible gas pains with this surgery. (I'm quoting the pre-op nurse when I asked a similar question).

Gas-x and beano will help with the intestinal gas, for example from foods, but in this surgery they fill that area with air to expand the area and then they expel it when finished and air gets trapped in your body and will eventually be absorbed by the body and some people feel it in their lower back or shoulders and neck. I was told gas-x wouldn't help with that but usually changing positions or walking helps move the air.

But ask your doctor about it just 2 be sure - i just remember the pre op nurse telling me that. ....did anyone else hear about this as well???

Blessed2know is correct that the surgery gases are not intestinal but in our abdominal cavity. The intestinal prep is to avoid add'l painful issues while recovering from the surgery. In my case it helped a lot because it was one less issue affecting my abdomen section.

I'm still in the hospital but will be kicked out sometime tomorrow. Instead of 3 1/2 hours it took almost 8 hours! I had 2 fibroids, each the size of CANTALOUPES but all went well! Pain meds r working great - not much pain at all do far!

I'm in hospital still too. Really pain hasn't been bad. My shoulder hurts and a tad of gas. Got cath out now waiting to pee. Just went for a walk.
