Anyone prescribed Letrozole before hysterectomy?

Hi, all!
I had a Myomectomy in 2005. Dr. removed all fibroids that she could except for ones in the uterine walls. (At the time, my husband and I were unsure if we were going to have children.) Now, 7 yrs later, several fibroids have grown back including one the size of an orange. My uterus is the size of a 4 mth pregnancy. I am scheduled for a hysterectomy on Feb 9th and supposed to start taking Letrozole today (a breast cancer drug) up to the date of my surgery.

Anyone else been prescribed this before their procedure? And for what reason? How did you feel on it? My Dr mentioned that she was curious to see if Letrozole reduced the size of my fibroids.

Thanks for any information you have!

Re: Anyone prescribed Letrozole before hysterectomy?

I have never heard of taking a breast cancer drug to reduce fibroids. I think I would ask my dr. more questions. Often you can look up drugs online to find out what the side affects are. Realize that when they test drugs they have to list everything that test subjects feel. If a test subject gets a cold they have to list that somewhere. When I do this I generally try to look at the very common side affects and the very dangerous ones.

Good luck with your surgery.

Re: Anyone prescribed Letrozole before hysterectomy?

Just wanted to let anyone who reads this know what I found out about taking Letrozole before a LH. My dr prescribed this to me for what I thought was to try to shrink the fibroids before removal.

After the procedure, she noted that the medication has softened my uterus which made it easier for her to remove. She noted that fibroids can be very hard and this made my time under anesthesia shorter.

Re: Anyone prescribed Letrozole before hysterectomy?

I had laperscoptic surgery in Dec.2010 to remove endo/scar adhesion but came back w avengionce. July 2011 had hysterectomy (left ovary, left fellopian tube n uterus removed). Everything was peachy, new lease on life until... The next part I know won't sound believable but I KNOW this to be true w ME, 7 months later I had a drinking binge (alcohol), I swear w in 24 hrs. It started again! The twisting, knotting, stabbing pain back in my abdomen. Not to mention the hormonal symptoms were BACK! I went immediately to see endo specialist he suggested I take a break fr surgery for a while qne try letrozole. I've been on it for 6 days now, no real difference so far. I want the surgery so bad, wish I had health insurance to do it sooner than later. Also side note, I did some research on alcohol consumption. Apparantly alcohol carries estrogen. There needs to be more studies I know in order to back up my personal expirience but I think woman in the healing process should refrain from any alcohol consumption. AND...the healing processes ISNOT 6 weeks, its at least a year! My two cents anyway...
