Met Surgeon: She said Lap. first then TAH if needed but no mention of cervix

My surgeon has tentatively scheduled me for Feb 15th for a surgical date but didn't mention if she was going transvaginally or just straight Abdominal Lap for my surgery. I really don't want to keep my cervix, but if she didn't mention it, maybe she plans on leaving it. I have to ask, but found it weird she didn't address it. Anyway, I know there are many posts about it that I can read up on, I guess I'm just speaking out loud now.

Is she waiting on test results? If not, you could always ask for another appointment to go over your concerns.

Best of luck for a great recovery!

When they say 'Total' that includes taking the cervix out. 'Supracervical' means they leave the cervix in. My doctor just told me I needed a total abdominal hysterectomy. I didn't realize until I got home and started researching it, that meant taking the cervix out as well. To be safe, ask her at your pre-op appointment.

If your surgery is going to be vaginal, it will be a total hysterectomy, meaning the cervix is also removed.

It's important to note that the cervix is not a separate organ, but actually part of the uterus.

FWIW, I had my cervix removed. I didn't know I had one, and I don't miss it now that it's gone.

Yay! I talked to the surgeon and she is doing a transvaginal. I thought she meant just plain laparascopy but nope, it's transvaginal so bye bye cervix. Oh, and my surgical date got moved to feb 1st.. eek! Now I'm really getting nervous. I guess this goes to show you, Write down what you want to ask before you get in there with the doctor. It is very easy to forget once in the room.

I also had to ask I'm having the same thing done as you on Feb 2. Was unsure if they were taking my cervix and wanted to have it gone too! And yes they are taking mine also Goodluck!

I put it in as one of my questions to ask. Then he told me. Maybe some women don't want to know/don't care so doctors don't volunteer the information? Either way, just write a list of things you want to know and let your doctor know you have questions. They should answer them freely.
