My Biggest Fear about Surgery

I'm having my TVH done Feb 2nd and my worse fear is waking up from surgery with a abdominal incision! I know I can handle it but I really don't want to spend more than one night in the hospital I have two boys and a fiance to get home too. I don't know if they will survive that long without me!

Just curious has anyone gone in for a TVH and woke up to find they had to do abdominal surgery? Also what was the reason they ended up doing abdominal surgery instead?

I've had two c-sections and a tummy tuck so I know I can handle it but I also wonder if it will do damage to my tummy tuck... Thank you all for your time I'm getting more and more nervous the closer to the date I get!

Re: My Biggest Fear about Surgery

Hi Jenvee - you just posted on my stress page LOL

Anyway, I am scheduled for a TVH on Monday and the same thought has crossed my mind. From what I got from my dr, I'm thinking the only reason she couldn't do anything vaginally is if the cervix won't come out. She said she did have one case due to endo that it would not come out.

I honestly think the chance of them having to switch it would be rare, but I guess it does happen. Guess we both just need to be positive, right?

Good luck!

Re: My Biggest Fear about Surgery

The reason I didn't have vaginal or laparascopic surgery is because my uterus with its fibroids and my ovary with its endometrioma were too large. Generally, your diagnostic screening would give the surgeon a good indication of the size of things, so the change would only happen if s/he encounters something that didn't show up in the diagnostics (ultrasound, CT scan, etc) or if things have changed a lot since those were done.

Re: My Biggest Fear about Surgery

I also was very afraid of waking to a big incision. My fibroid-filled uterus was too big for a vaginal hyster so I had a LSH. Everything but my cervix removed through small lap incisions.

The skill of the surgeon is a big factor in outcome. You can ask if she has had to convert to TAH often and if so why. There can be various reasons for a change in the plan but you should discuss your concerns with your Dr. Most Drs don't need to convert often.

next week!

Re: My Biggest Fear about Surgery

I think the surgeon has to tell us that they may have to do abdominal incision, just to cover their bases. It probably doesn't happen often. I did look at my tummy in Recovery just to see if it looked different. And it didn't :-)

Re: My Biggest Fear about Surgery

I obviously do not know the extent of your surgery, but why can't you have it done laparoscopically?

Re: My Biggest Fear about Surgery

tlprell - I'm pretty sure vaginal surgery is preferable to lap. No incisions at all.

What I meant was: If for some reason they cannot do it vaginally when they get in the OR then why couldn't it be done laparoscopically?
