Is it safe to take acetaminophen so close to surgery?

My aunt has come just before my Feb 8 OP and I have been taking acetaminophen now for two days. Is it safe to take this so close to my surgery?

Re: Is it safe to take acetaminophen so close to surgery?

Percocet and Tylenol both have acetominophen in them as the pain killer. It does not thin out your blood. It should be safe for pre-surgery use.

I would think that it would be wise to avoid aspirin and ibuprophen based pain killers since those will thin your blood, although I was not told to not use them prior to my surgery. The only thing I was told to stop early was one of my diabetes medications.

Re: Is it safe to take acetaminophen so close to surgery?

I would check w/ your doc or pharmacist. I am having a second, unrelated surgery and the do not take list for that surgery has oxycodone on it. My pill bottle from the hysterectomy says oxycodone w/ apap on it: generic for percocet. During the pre-surgery review for my 2nd surgery I was also told not to take my multi-vitamin due to it having Vit E in it (GYN never told me not to take). It is so hard to be told so many different things, just like w/ the bowel prep-so many different procedures. Remember that pain meds are often constipating, which many ladies have trouble w/ after surgery.

Re: Is it safe to take acetaminophen so close to surgery?

Here is a detailed list of what I am not suppose to take starting at different times before my TVH Da Vinci, this is not my personal list but rather a list my doctor hands out to everyone before their surgery:

Top says Tylenol only not past 3 days before
Vitamins: 7 days before
Herbal Supplements : 7 days before
Fish Oil: 7 days before
Plavix: 7 days before
Coumadin: 7 days before
Asprin (Ecotrin, Aggrenox): 5 days before
Celebrex: 3 days before
Motrin, Advil, Ibprofen: 3 days before
Mobic: 3 days before
Naprosyn: 3 days before
Aleve, Anaprox, Naproxen: 3 days before
Daypro: 3 days before
Relafen: 3 days before
Voltaren: 3 days before
Toradol: 3 days before
Indocin: 3 days before

I find the vitamins, herbal supplements and fish oil odd things to stop taking before but none the less will follow the orders.. Out of this whole list I only take Aleve when in pain so starting tomorrow I cant take it, as my surgery is on Tuesday..

Re: Is it safe to take acetaminophen so close to surgery?

If you have not been to your pre-op appointment yet, the doctor should discuss what is acceptable and what is not. I was instructed to stop all medications with very few exceptions 48 hours before surgery.

Re: Is it safe to take acetaminophen so close to surgery?

my pre-op nurse just told me presp. i had and tylenol only cause other over -the -counters could cause too much bleeding during surgery.cut all herbs off.i ended up bleeding too much during surgery and i was white as ghost for many weeks due to this.i think it was where i only quit motrin 3 days before surgery and i had been taking for a long time before.
dr. let me cheat and let me drink black coffee day of surgery cause surgery was after 12:00 but i had to drink coffee in between 6-7 a.m. only.but as everybody has said check 1st w/ your pre-op nurse 1st.everybody is different.gosh i would hate to be doing whole journey over.hugs-to you
