surgery was a no go ;(

I went in today and was ready for surgery, ready to get it over with, mind set and all. I was called back for pre op had my IV antibiotics and seen the anesthesiologist and my doctor that was going to do the surgery. As I was getting ready to walk out to go to the OR room the billing lady stopped me and my husband to tell us our insurance is calling my surgery pre existing due to me having endometriosis. They gave me the option to go ahead with the surgery and pay 30,000.00 dollars or wait a year till they will pay for it. I don't have that money to pay so I have to wait, my doctor came back in the room to tell me he will do all he can to help me and try to get the insurance to let me have the surgery, due to me bleeding non stop for the past 10 months. I'm just devastated I don't know what to do I cant even imagine going another year of bleeding. I'm just at a loss for words at this point. I feel as if my heart is broken, I was so excited for the surgery and excited to not bleed non stop and feel like a normal person again, an its just ripped away from me.

Re: surgery was a no go ;(

This is outrageous! I deal with insurance companies frequently and I'm disgusted with how often they try to get out of paying for covered services. Also, why didn't the hospital ascertain the insurance coverage before the DAY of your surgery?! I'm so sorry you had to go through this. I do feel, however, that with appeal and emphasis on the "medically necessary" reasoning for your hysterectomy you may be allowed to proceed before one year. Hang in there and bask in the support provided by this website.

Re: surgery was a no go ;(

I am SO sorry to hear this and I too agree that the insurance issue should had been cleared before the day of the surgery.

I would keep in contact with the doctor who CAN make a difference with the insurance company - doctors see this time and time again and they do have pull so please keep in touch with the doctor regarding the insurance company.

I hope you are able to find comfort until this insurance issue is settled and you have a surgery date.

How terrible that must be. I can't imagine how awful. I think I'm glad that I'm in the UK right now, and don't hve to worry about things like insurance. We may complain about our medical services from time to time, but really it is just wonderful.

Hugs to you.

Re: surgery was a no go ;(

I'm so very sorry! I can only imagine how you must have felt. Like you, I had been looking forward to my surgery and was excited for the day to come. If this had happened to me, I would have lost it. I thought this was a thing of the past, but it turns out the law, passed last year, doesn't take effect until 2014. Arrrrggg!

But - you may have an option if your doctor can't make the insurance company see reason. It's called Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP). It may be something you can use.

I know what it's like to bleed nonstop and how debilitating it can be. I wish you all the best. Good Luck - I've got my fingers crossed!

Why on earth would a hospital wait until the day of!!! Hope it works out foe you so you don't have to wait a year! Did you just sign up with your insurance co? I know with mine you have a waiting period for pre existing conditions!

Re: surgery was a no go ;(

That is LAME, and I'm thoroughly DISGUSTED!! I'm so sorry you had to go through all that preparation only to have it taken away from you at the very last minute. It's just WRONG!

(((hugs)))
