No Bowel Prep/Healthy Eating Questions

My surgery is scheduled for February 13 with no bowel prep. Should I begin taking Benefiber or Metamucil now so hopeful I can get my body ready and clean for after surgery? I know I do not get enough fiber daily and I am already having difficulties passing gas lately which I believe may be due to the fibroids pressing on other parts.

Also, I have read where some princesses said they probably should not have ate heavy foods the day prior to surgery. Should I stick with vegetables and soups and avoid meats and starches leading up to the days prior to the surgery?

Just curious, are there any healthy eating plans anyone is following? I think I will do better if I have it laid out in front of me and begin preparing and freezing foods next week.

Thanks,

Re: No Bowel Prep/Healthy Eating Questions

I started taking colace about a week before surgery. The last few days leading up to surgery I ate pretty clean, which is common for me anyway. The last thing you want in your stomach would be heavy greasy undigested meals. My surgery was 7:30am. The day before I probably had my usual oatmeal for breakfast, egg white omelette for lunch, maybe a salad and I think for dinner I just had a clear type soup and then a protein smoothie later on. I would also suggest taking some healthy snacks to the hospital just incase - fibre 1 bars, prunes, trail mix and your own healthy cereal. My hospital food was very low fibre. Making meals ahead is a good idea. I am 7 weeks post op and tonight we had meatloaf, baked beans and mashed sweet potato all out of the freezer, made in November. All I had to do was make a salad. Good luck! As far as eating plans I follow Weight Watchers and am a lifetime member.

Re: No Bowel Prep/Healthy Eating Questions

My sister is a hyster sister. She advised me to do my version of a bowel prep to prepare for that momentous first post op BM. I just ate healthier, more fiber rich foods more often. I'm already on stool softeners due to meds I currently take. That BM scared me, however when it arrived on day 4, I was ready. It hurt, it hurt a lot. I've never had children, but I apparently Lamazed my way through it. It happened like that just once. The rest were smooth as....well smooth. Walking, water, fiber, water, stool softeners, and finally water; this is a good recipe for post op BMs. Good luck!!!

Re: No Bowel Prep/Healthy Eating Questions

Thanks for responding. The doctor called a few minutes after I posted this and told me I would have to do a bowel prep. I am going to search the site to see how everyone was able to make it through that. I only drink water, so I dread having to drink the Miralax mixed with Gatorade.

I know it will benefit me even more now to start eating better beginning this weekend so hopefully the prep won't be as bad. Thanks again.
