I am worried its Infection

I'm almost 4 weeks post surgery, but I'm having some issues and I need some info. I've got a call into the docs, but they haven't called back and I'm worried - guess I need some support more than I thought I did

I've been spotting/bleeding without stop since my surgery, mostly brown/ pink, occasionally red. The last two days I've barely been able to move, my tummy and lower back were killing me every time I moved! Last night I noticed the most terrible smell coming from 'down there' and it's no better today, although the hurt in my tummy is better. It smells like infection. Not like a yeast infection, but like .... how to explain?

Ok, here .. in 2005 I had a different surgery, and no one gave me any aftercare instructions. I went home and did my best, but left the bandages on and didn't wash the area, for fear of damaging stitches. The whole area got infected and I ended up back in the hosp. THAT'S the smell.

Is there a way that something inside me is infected, damaged, broken? I know NOTHING about this stuff and besides the emotional impact is has done (depression etc) everything seems like it was going alright. I'm sorry if I've said anything wrong or didn't do this post right, like I said I'm new to all of this and have no one else I can ask.

Thank you for reading and thank you to anyone who can reply.
~Mira

Re: I am worried its Infection

I'm sorry you are having problems. I hope your doctor has called you back by now because it does sound like you need to be seen. If they do not call you, I would go to the ER. Personally, I never bled once after my surgery, but while my stiches were healing I did have some brownish discharge so I think that part is normal. As for the smell, there is a weird smell that comes with the stiches disolving and I did notice that a lot during weeks 2-5 but it didn't smell infected, just weird. It is hard to explain. Anyway with pain and bleeding and odor I would definately get checked out because you could have an infection or torn stitches and no matter what it is better to be safe than sorry. I hope you feel better very soon.

Re: I am worried its Infection

The discharge is normal I too had it days after the surgery and during my 2 week checkup. The smell is yucky and I complained to my doctor about it so she checked me to find that I did have an infection, prescribed antibiotics and it was gone in a week.

My doctor believes the infection was a result of the stitches. Regarding your other issues of pain and bleeding I would call the doctor again and if no results with that take a trip to the emergency room just to be sure.

Re: I am worried its Infection

As daydreamblevr said, if your dr has not called you back by now I would place another call or go to the E.R. and get checked out. It is normal to have discharge and some odor as stitches dissolve but the odor you are talking about seems to be above and beyond the normal. If there is an infection it's always best to treat it as soon as possible. Let us know how you make out. Good luck

Hugs,
Tracy

Re: I am worried its Infection

I had lavh the same day as you. Bleeding only for a few days (just a little bit) and no smells.

Please, call your doctor. If I had something like you describe, I'd even go to the emergency room.

One week after operation, my navel incision was open and I went immediately to ER. It is closed, now, but I'm traumatized by the experience.

Please, sister, err on the side of caution.

I hope it is nothing and that you recover well.

Hugs!!!!

Re: I am worried its Infection

Thank you all so much for your replies and concern. I'm so sorry that I was unable to get back online to let you know I was ok.

The doctor's office called me back and had me come in immediately. I went in and Dr. W checked everything out (holy wow it hurt like crazy when he looked in there!!) and I have an infection where the stitches are. Also, I've pulled one set of stitches, but apparently it's no biggie.

He has given me antibiotics, more 'resting!' and also I've been put on Zoloft for depression. My follow up appt is this Wednesday.

Thank you all so very much for your kindness and love - you're all a blessing to me.
