Ice - ok for how long?

I have had an ice bag on my belly 24/7 since Wed(surgery was on Tuesday) and it has helped a lot. Is it ok to have the ice on this much?
I couldn't believe the difference when I put the ice on. The nurse said she forgot to give it to me....

Re: Ice - ok for how long?

The rule of thumb is 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. You should have a dish towel between you ice pack and your skin. The time off from the ice is to prevent damage to your skin, such as frostbite and to allow you or someone else to periodically check on your site.

Re: Ice - ok for how long?

My dr told me to alternate between ice and heat. 20 minutes ice/20 minutes off/20 minutes heat etc.

Most of my pain is centered around my right incision. I guess thats where he did the most work.
