Re: Period if keeping cervix?

I had a NovaSure, didn't work. I asked the doc yesterday about the mini periods and he said they cauterize the top of the cervix to try to prevent them. Good enough for me.

Re: Period if keeping cervix?

It is good to know this. Because my periods have been so heavy, troublesome, and persistant I have had a fear that even after surgery they won't stop. A mini period would be like a dream to me but had I not known to expect I would have probably worried myself sick that they were going to return to what they were before.

Re: Period if keeping cervix?

The cervix issue is complex. I appreciate both viewpoints. My concerns were possible future surgery do to cancer and how my sex life might be affected. Pre hyster, I had never heard of a mini period nor had I heard of a higher incidence of prolapse if the cervix was removed. I opted to remove everything based on the potential of future surgery due to cancer. As far as sex goes, my DR and I discussed that since I had a vibrant sex life-physically, mentally and emotionally, the risks of dysfunction were microscopic. And to the argument "why remove a healthy organ?" the cervix is part of the uterus so it follows that if the uterus is diseased and malfunctioning and being removed, the cervix should go as well. Ovaries? I removed them because I feel that the female reproductive system works best as a "system" and with a major part of the system being removed, the ovaries would begin to fail. Their removal also removes a cancer risk. My DR and I have worked together to fine tune my HRT. I have never felt better in my entire menstrual life and sex is stupendous; I recently "multipled" for the first time. Finally, why would you go through a hysterectomy that would free you from being a slave to the bleeding and the pain and all the other joys our malfunctions system threw at us only to have the potential for a mini period and continued monthly cycling? I say NO WAY!!! Of course, this is my opinion; equally as valid as the sisters who decided to keep their cervix or their ovaries. Which is right? The right choice is the one made with all the research you can have. Sorry this was so long, I needed to get it off my chest. Peace to you sisters : )

Re: Period if keeping cervix?

Hi, yes you could but chances are you wont!! I had an LSH last year and kept my cervix as well and havent had a drop of blood at all!! She cauterized it very well to make sure. Good luck to you and the chances are small so it can happen ,but for the most part probably wont! Good luck in your surgery! You will feel amazing soon!

Re: Period if keeping cervix?

Well, now that i am two days on the other side (YAY!), I confirmed with my doctor that since I kept my cervix I MAY still have minimal bleeding (mostly just spotting) and I may not. If I do she said it probably would stop after awhile (I'm not quite sure what after awhile is though; they were getting ready to wheel me into the OR so I didn't question her). We made the decision to keep my cervix because I don't fit into any of the high risk categories and doctor's opinion is that it helps keep bladder and everything else in place so I said, why not.
