Keeping one ovary

Anyone know what to expect if I'm keeping one ovary? I hear I can still have all the flashes and weird stuff until ovary 2 takes over, but the ovary I'm keeping, well it has always been kind of a sleepy one, so I'm worried...

Re: Keeping one ovary

Hi Jodi!
I'm 4 months post-op & my remaining ovary just started sort of working again. I'm still having at least one hot flash a day, but better than 15/day which is how it was for the 1st 3 months.

Good luck to you. :-)

Re: Keeping one ovary

Hi. I had my hysterectomy over 5 years ago and they left one ovary. I have been fine since. Everything kicked in as though I had 2. Until recently, that is. I am 46 and feel like I have about 80% of the long list of menopause symptoms. I think the ovary is giving up a little early but at least it worked for as long as it did. Good luck and hope all goes well.

Re: Keeping one ovary

I kept one ovary and it's not working. I started HRT a week ago. Symptoms improved but not gone.

Re: Keeping one ovary

Howdy Jodi,
I am 4 weeks post op. I had to keep one ovary unexpectedly because of the risks associated with taking it out (long story). We were not sure if it is/was going to work and week 3 determined it is not. I went on HRT 6 days ago and most of the symptoms have improved. Now we just have to tweek it to how my body responds. I believe patience and great communication with your Doctor is key in your recovery and HRT. This site has helped me with a lot of questions, concerns, and has given me comfort to know I am not alone!!

Re: Keeping one ovary

Jodi- I had one of my ovaries removed in 2004 prior to my hyster in 2007. Due to my age, I was already starting to 'feel warm', so it was inevitable for me, then when I had my hyster my remaining ovary had endo and gyn tried to save what he could hoping to revive it. Good luck to you.

Re: Keeping one ovary

I had one of my ovaries removed along with a large endometrioma 9 years agos at age 33. I never had any symptoms or problems. My cycles stayed where they had been prior to the surgery. Every one seems so different! I am scheduled for a hyster soon and will have them take the remaining ovary because of another cyst.

Re: Keeping one ovary

I am about 2.5 months post op and my ovary is not functioning. I take Premarin and feel better than I have in many years! Each person is different, keep in good communication with your Dr. and discuss everything so they can help find a solution for you! Best wishes
