Weight gain??

Hello!
Does anyone know if weight gain is associated a hysterectomy? I'm having only my uterus removed with the possibilty of removing the right ovary...the decision is mine. I think I'm going to keep them for as long as I can.
I'm worried about gaining weight as I've lost 65 lbs and really really worked hard at it and would hate for any of it to come back....even though I've been stress eating lately
Weight gain, mood swings & sex life are some of my concerns... I'd appreciate any advice.
This site has really been great!
Thanks!
Laura

Re: Weight gain??

I have lost 9 lbs so far this week post op.. Im in shock too.. But maybe dont use me as an example since I just had my surgery.
I have known a few women including my 2 Aunts that had them and have not gained weight..

Physical activity and eating right has more to do with it I am sure as I am eating sooo much healthier now and I am not even close to being able to exercise yet..

Re: Weight gain??

I asked my doctor about weight gain she said no proof you just gain weight because of surgery. She did say don't use your recovery time to eat poorly make good food choices walk a little everyday. After six weeks increase exercise as I'm feeling up to it : ) oh side note! I'm not having overies removed.

Re: Weight gain??

Hey kjday...you're right about making poor food choices. I feel like I've been "stress eating" for the past week. I am so nervous/anxious about the surgery! Good luck! I think I'm going to keep both ovaries too. Keep me posted...I'm going in 3 days after you.

Hi Gmac4....how are you feeling? Hope you're doing well!
Thanks for your support

Hi Tealady....hope all goes well for you! Keep me posted!
Good luck!

Just my experience with my own surgery and surgery of family/friends/coworkers. My ovaries were removed and I have gained 70 pounds in the last three years. I too had lost all of my weight after having my kids (70 pounds) three years before surgery. I was a size 6 up to four months after surgery. I am now 18-20...I tried losing the weight just like I had done before and nothing...it doesn't budge. I do CrossFit, which is one of the hardest exercise programs out there. Nothing! I do not believe it is what you eat and lack of exercise...I believe it is the removal of the ovaries. I know lots of people that have had surgery and those that did not have their ovaries removed did not gain the weight like the ones that did. Just my opinion and personal experience.

Re: Weight gain??

I'm 5 weeks post-op and weigh exactly the same as pre-surgery. I kept one ovary and it's not working well. Just started HRT. I'm 46 and have been having peri-menopausal symptoms for a while anyway. My weight was up about 5-7 pounds at a week after surgery, but I think it was due to constipation and water retention. It came back off pretty quickly. But, I feel squishy and soft and have lost a lot of muscle tone. I'm overweight anyway and need to lose 75 pounds, so I'm sad about the muscle tone loss but it happens. Still not allowed to do any ab work and limited on other exercise.

Re: Weight gain??

1 year post op and I've actually lost 45 lbs but I did change my eating habits no sign of weight gain before the change of eating or after the surgery, good luck
