Swell Belly??

I keep seeing many of you refer to still having a swell belly. Can someone explain what this is?
I understand our belly being bigger from the surgery & gas, but for weeks or months?
Or, is it that our bellies were swollen even before surgery due to fibroids, enlarged uterus, etc and just not gone down from having parts removed?
After the incision heals, can you fit into you pre-surgery clothes, pants? Granted, that there's not been a significant weight gain during recovery.
I thought I'd loose the prego look after surgery! But now I'm so confused about this whole Swelly Belly thing
Surgery in 2 days & this is were my mind has gone!

Re: Swell Belly??

I have never heard of the "swell belly". My surgery is a month out and I am already a big girl. I would like to know about this too.

Re: Swell Belly??

Well, I am 4 weeks tomorrow (yay) from davinci & for me swell belly is just like it says, your belly will be swollen kind of like your pregnant. I have a "pooch" from having kids & its "flappy" as my 7yr old says (lol) & when I left the castle it was hard like I was preg. again. Mine went down in about 2 weeks but it will come back if you do to much..like walking around walmart (really don't do it like I did).
Still in the evening if I do to much it will swell just a little, it dosen't hurt just annoying.
I can wear jeans (NOT tight ones) but only for a few hours by 6pm I'm ready for sweats or pj pants. I hope this helps!! God bless you & good luck!

Re: Swell Belly??

How long was it before you were able to get out and do things. Maybe not walk around Walmart but say walk around TJ Maxx or something? My best friend is coming out for a week, 10 days after my surgery and I was wondering what I might be able to do activity wise. I know everyone is different.

Re: Swell Belly??

Really it wasn't that long for me. I was able to, but my belly would feel "heavy" & I would get really tired really quick & I am a person who loves to shop but I would say to my hubby I have to go home.
By 10 days, I was able to walk more, but like I said be prepared to be tired, & if you need to go home don't be afraid to say so!!
Your outside stitches will look healed but your insides are NOT!
I still need to rest after being out all day..its really frustrating when you want to go but your just so tired, I'm ready for that to pass!

Re: Swell Belly??

The swells belly is definitely real. Basically, our organs get manhandled and there are lots of internal stitches and that can cause inflammation and swelling. I'm 5 weeks post-op and it's getting better now. Some have it worse than others. Swelling is worse at the end of the day after doing a lot. Mine gets better when I lie down for a while.

Re: Swell Belly??

So hopefully I can expect to go out to dinner a couple of times and do some light shopping trips, especially later in the week because that will put me at about 2 weeks post op. I am sure at that point I will be desperate to get out of the house.

Re: Swell Belly??

Yes that sounds like something I could of handled at 2 weeks. Just remember to rest in the evenings, maybe watch some movies. Good luck, I think you'll be fine, its ok to be worried about things, I was up untill the morning I left for the castle for some reason I was just really calm that day.

I think that might be a strain having your friend come for a week 10 days after your surgery. I can't imagine entertaining someone for a week only 10 days out from my surgery unless she's there to hang out at your house and take care of you. At 10 days out, I spent a better part of that week in bed, could sit for about an hour and a half before I had to lay down due to swelling and pressure and I've had a fast problem free recovery with my doctor clearing me to drive at 2 weeks. I only took a couple short trips (pharmacy, grocery store) with this privilege. However, you probably shouldn't be in a car too much at 10 days since an accident can ruin your internal stitching.

Re: Swell Belly??

I could not roam a store for any length of time and definitely not with shopping bags at two weeks and I had no complications to speak of. You'll still be sore but most likely off narcs but you'll still need pain management and rest. I still have swelly belly at 16 weeks. It has lessened but is still there. I can wear my smaller jeans but they still pester my belly button incision. Good luck to you.
