Question - Last Ovary Removed - Will HRT Cause Endo to Return? Last Ovary Removed - Will HRT Cause Endo to Return?

I had my original hyst Dec 2010 and he left one ovary so that I didn't go into full blown menopause. I was having trouble with my bowels and after many tests being run by my GI doc, she questioned that the endo could be causing my problems. Went to the gyno and he did a laproscopy yesterday and removed the other ovary. He confirmed that the endo was indeed fused to my bowel and that was why I was having so much pain and all the tummy problems. He said we'd talk at my 2 week post-op appt about HRT.

My question is if we removed the ovary because it was still releasing hormones and allowing the endo to grow, then won't HRT also allow the endo to grow? Is there a dosage he'll give me that will keep me from having horrible menopause symptoms but not let the endo grow?

Re: Last Ovary Removed - Will HRT Cause Endo to Return?

Molly,
Estrogen can cause endo to grow. Sometimes a doctor may prescribe progesterone also to help offset the effects of the estrogen on endo. Just because estrogen may cause endo to grow doesn't necessarily mean that you absolutely cannot use estrogen. Everyone is different, you'll need to discuss with your doctor and weigh the pros and cons.

I had endo and was given estradiol. I've been on it for over 20 years.

Thanks for the insight ladies! I will make a note of them and ask the doc about them at my appt. I am just trying to be able to go into the post-op appt with at least a little information.

Re: Last Ovary Removed - Will HRT Cause Endo to Return?

I have endometriosis and kept one ovary. On the Combi patch and my doc said the progesterone would balance the estrogen as far as endo is concerned. So definitely look into that one.

Re: Last Ovary Removed - Will HRT Cause Endo to Return?

I had a partial hysterectomy in March of last year - he left me one ovary. I continuted to have extreme pain after it. In September he removed the remaining ovary. He told me he found endometriosis and removed it when he took out my ovary. Up until that point, I never had any sign of endo in my life. He started me on a low dose estrogen patch. I continuted to have pain, and we feared the endo had come back. He started me on progesterone. I still have the pain, but he wants me to continue on it for a few more months to see if it will eliminate the endo. If it doesn't than he said he might have to go back in. Keeping my fingers crossed it takes care of it! Good luck to you!
