Which estrogen cream doesn't require an applicator?

Hi All - I posted this in part in the Post Op section but probably better to put it here - I am a little over two weeks post-op from TLH-BSO and am 42. No menopause symptoms yet other than vaginal dryness (and possible yeast infection found at today's 2 week post-op visit). My surgeon wrote me 3 prescriptions for different vaginal estrogen creams to start using to help with the vaginal dryness (not to try all at once, but to have one in hand for whatever my onco will agree to) - But I'm confused because she also indicated she would definitely prefer I not begin using one that requires an applicator to put inside (ie Vagifem). She wrote me a script for Premarin Cream (waiting to hear from my onco if this one's ok) and Estring (which she also doesn't want me start using yet). Can anyone please tell me which local estrogen does not require an applicator, ie you just can put it on the outside or just the lower inside of the vaginal area? Thank you so much!!!

Re: Which estrogen cream doesn't require an applicator?

Either Premarin cream or Estrace cream could potentially be used without an applicator (though they come with one). Same with compounded estriol cream from a compounding pharmacy.

Did your DR have any samples of those that you could try before filling a prescription?

Once you are cleared to use an applicator, my favorite is Vagifem because it's so neat and easy to use. Your DR might have some samples of that as well when the time comes.

Hugs,
Linda

Re: Which estrogen cream doesn't require an applicator?

Thanks Surferbabe!! I wish I had asked about samples darn! My onco approved the premarin cream today and as you say, the pharmacist said I can use it w/o the applicator. For some reason, my onco didn't want Estrace. After 4 weeks of the Premarin, she wants me to switch to the Vagifem. I'm glad you've had good luck, hopefully this will work out well for me and give me a bit of relief asap

caolinagrl42, did you ever switch to Vagifem? If you did how do you like it? Is it 10mcg?

Re: Which estrogen cream doesn't require an applicator?

Hi Sunny, I did try Vagifem and did not find it helpful, did not seem to help with the persistent dryness. I have a wonderful nurse practices who recently sent me to an integrative massage therapist who specializes in women's health and feel so much better now, not taking vagifem anymore, just the occasional Replens.
