Does everyone need bowel prep?

I had my pre-op visit with my doctor this week and there was no mention of bowel prep. I have to go to the hospital for pre-op testing on 3/1 and they told me the hospital would tell me when to stop eating and drinking. I meant to ask about bowel prep but forgot. I will wait until my hospital testing and ask there - then call the doctor if I need to. But I was doing some reading online and read that some doctors feel that bowel prep is outdated and really not necessary. Is there anyone on here who didn't need to do anything?

Re: Does everyone need bowel prep?

I'm having LAVH on 2/22. I don't need a bowel prep. I got in touch with my doctor just to be sure I don't need one, and the doctor assured me I didn't need one. He said he's done many of these surgeries and never had a problem.

I have to be on a liquid diet the day before. No liquids after midnight, and go to the hospital at 7am.

After reading so much on here, I was really worried about not having a bowel prep, but the doctor assured me I didn't need one.

Re: Does everyone need bowel prep?

I had my TVH in July. I did not have a bowel prep, and no special diet restrictions - just nothing to eat or drink past midnight the night before. I did eat light the last couple days pre op, because I knew I wouldn't have a BM for about a week and also I was too nervous to eat much anyway. I'm really glad I didn't need a bowel prep since they can be hard on the body.

Re: Does everyone need bowel prep?

Hi!
My Dr. said the bowel prep was outdated. I have no other instructions other than not to eat after 11 the night before the surgery.
I was a little surprised and concerned about not doing any kind of prep before.
I was actually thinking about putting myself on a liquid diet the day before...lol!
Good Luck

Re: Does everyone need bowel prep?

Thank you for your replies. I'm very relieved to know I might not need the bowel prep. I've done it twice before for colonoscopies - not pleasant.

Re: Does everyone need bowel prep?

I had TAH-BSO on 2/13 and doctor did not have me do a bowel prep. Just nothing to eat/drink after midnight the night before. I did eat very light the day/evening before surgery.

Re: Does everyone need bowel prep?

I did not have bowel prep or dietary restrictions either...my only confusion came when doc said no eating or drinking after midnight but hospital pre-op nurse said twelve hours before surgery which was 8pm...just to be on the safe side, I ate really light the day before my surgery...started peri-colace (which I take at regular intervals even now along with anti-gas med) and stopped eating and drinking after 8pm...I did have a sip of water before bed and one when brushing my teeth before heading to the castle...I had no problems with surgery, BM or gas after...or since and I've eaten every spicy food in the book!!

The most important thing is to follow your doctor's/hospital pre-op instructions to minimize complications for you or your surgeon and to avoid having surgery postponed.

For me, the end result has definitely been worth any inconvenience! Good luck and prayers for an uneventful surgery and a smooth recovery!

I'm having a TVH and the day before Surgery I have to be on a liquid diet. Anything that turns clear. At 1pm I have to take 4 dulcolax and Mix 8.3 oz of Miralax with 64oz of gatorade. I have till midnight to finish that. I'm not going to be a happy camper Wed. I'm guessing some Dr's are different. You are so lucky. Anyways Good Luck.

Re: Does everyone need bowel prep?

I had lavh and all I had to do was to go to the loo normally (no laxatives, etc) and wash myself with isobetadine (full body, including hair).
