DaVinci with a vaginal removal?

Talked with the nurse today for a few last minute questions and she commented about a vaginal removal. I thought that with the DaVinci the uterus was removed through the incisions. Am I understanding this incorrectly?

So I am really having 2 surgeries - the DaVinci and a Vaginal Hysterectomy. Anyone else have this? I plan to ask the doctor Friday morning before my surgery but just curious.

And she is still convinced I only need 2 weeks away from work. Ugh. I get disability - but it has to be doctor approved. I asked her to to do 4 weeks but she thinks I am trying to take advantage of my company this way. What? I just want enough time to heal, if it is 2 weeks fine, but I am so worried that I am going to get pushed back early. And now it sounds like I will have more than one surgery and more than one area healing.

Re: DaVinci with a vaginal removal?

Is it the nurse or the doctor who thinks that 2 weeks should be enough time off after the surgery? It sounds like you really need to get some clarification from your doctor.

Let us know what you find out, OK? Thinking of you and sending hugs.

Re: DaVinci with a vaginal removal?

I am sched 3/14...same thing. My dr said he would remove cervix vaginally. I wasnt thrilled to hear that! I go for pre op on Monday and I have a whole list of questions...I also thought everything came out thru the incisions. Will let you know what he tells me. I do realize after reading all the forums that every surgery is different.

Re: DaVinci with a vaginal removal?

It's really just one surgery, but if they are removing the entire uterus including cervix, they do remove the uterus vaginally usually. If they leave the cervix then everything is removed from the small incisions. Talk to the Dr about that 2 wks, I don't think it's long enough. It's too bad the davinci company has convinced some Drs that such short times are right for everyone. Be sure your Dr knows what's involved to do your job. Good luck at your appt.

Re: DaVinci with a vaginal removal?

My surgery is this Friday and I will be sure to ask all of this before when the doctor meets with me. I will be sure to let you know what I find out.

I also have essure and have had so many pain issues since they were placed in 2007. I talked with her about making sure she gets them out but plan on reminding her. I had a borderline tumor removed 3 years ago and asked the surgeon then to take them out but he "forgot" and left them in. Ugh.

This isn't my normal obgyn, but a ovarian/cervical cancer specialist. When I call I don't talk directly to her, she has a nurse who funnels the questions. So I have no idea if the 2 weeks is really coming from her or her nurse. It is definitely on my list for my pre-op meeting!! If she tries to force me back to work I will go to my regular obgyn and have her help me - because she sent me to this lady in the first place. If only my stupid body didn't produce borderline tumors! Then I could have just had my doc do the surgery and all would be well.

That makes me feel a little better. They are taking the cervix because of some odd paps I have had. That and family history of issues later in life. I don't really care one way or the other.

That could explain the vaginal delivery of your uterus.

When the uterus is removed through the lap incisions with either a laparoscopic or daVinci hysterectomy, the uterus is cut into small pieces. Sometimes having the uterus cut up is not best choice as stray cells could implant in various areas.

Re: DaVinci with a vaginal removal?

I had Da Vinci total hyst with everything (ovaries, uterus, cervix) removed vaginally. Cancer was suspected so everything was removed intact. A gyn/onc performed my surgery and she said that I could take 2 weeks at a minimum for recovery, but she left it open to me. There is no way that I could have been ready to return to work after 2 weeks. I felt quite good after 4 weeks, but ended up taking 5 weeks. That last week I took a trip to Calif to visit my son.

Re: DaVinci with a vaginal removal?

Thanks everyone. I am feeling much better. I am normally a rational person and freaking out like this is so unlike me! The first thing on my list is the time off. In no way do I want to take advantage of my employer, but I want to make sure I am healed before going back.

Since there has been uterine cancer in my family, I bet that is why she is doing it all vaginally. I didn't realize it was common since everyone either seems to have one or the other.

You gals are great!
