Fibroids--did anyone have their ovaries removed, too?

Did anyone here have to have their ovaries removed as well as the
Uterus? I have a fibroid that is as large as a full term babies head.
I am having a TAH on march 6th. The doc wants my ovaries too. He wanted
My cervix too but I refused. Anyone have an opinion? Oh and I also
Look and feel 5 months pregnant and HATE it!!!!

Re: Fibroids--did anyone have their ovaries removed, too?

Have you had a second opinion about what is best for you? Since you and your doctor are not on the same page, it is especially important that you have another opinion to make sure that the surgery you are scheduled for is the right one for you.

If you are scheduled for a TAH, you are scheduled to have your total/complete uterus removed. That means the cervix, too. So if you are wanting to keep your cervix, you would not want to have a TAH.

The cervix is actually the bottom portion of the uterus and fibroids can grow from it, even after a partial/supracervical hysterectomy. That could be why your doctor would like to remove the entire organ.

What reasons did your doctor give for wanting to remove your ovaries? That could help you with your decision.

Re: Fibroids--did anyone have their ovaries removed, too?

My doc left the decision about the ovaries up to me. We agreed that he'd leave them in unless he saw a problem once he was in surgery. There was a problem and everything came out (ovaries, tubes, uterus including cervix).

Re: Fibroids--did anyone have their ovaries removed, too?

If there is a problem with your ovaries you will want to have them removed. If you don't have cancer you may be eligible to participate in the study that is pinned to the top of the board. I did it and it was very informative and helped me determine what to do.

I would also get a second opinion. Some drs. are biased to certain procedures and will do them because that is what they always do. Another dr. may be able to recommend different solutions. Ask questions as to why a certain procedure is being done.

There are glands in the vagina that respond to your hormones that can provide adequate lubrication. Libido (sex drive) is also a response to hormones.

Thus, your concerns are actually more related to your ovaries than your cervix.

I do not have my cervix but I do have both ovaries. I have no issues with lubrication or libido. Both are just fine!

Re: Fibroids--did anyone have their ovaries removed, too?

I feel your pain, I had a great big Fibroid as big as a newborns head also and I looked 5-6 months pregnant. I was miserable. I thought about keeping ovaries and cervix, but Dr advised against it but it was my choice. His resoning was this. If done the road I developed a problem with my ovaries like ovarian cancer or cyst I would have to have surgery again. I deceided to have them out and the cervix. Now it is done and the only thing I would like is a Tummy tuck.

Re: Fibroids--did anyone have their ovaries removed, too?

I had a full tummy tuck in 2005... Another reason
I don't want this done! I love my belly so much but not
Since it looks pregnant! I'm going to be 46 on march 12th.
I'm a grandmother to a beautiful baby boy! I am not
Close to menopause yet.

I have heard about prolapse after the shelf is removed.
Also I can't gain any weight. Hormones have that
Side effect

Re: Fibroids--did anyone have their ovaries removed, too?

My doctor said she'd keep the ovaries unless she saw a reason for them to go and they're still in place. I'm 45, just to throw that out there. I wanted the cervix gone because there's a chance you can still have mini-periods if it remains. Even though I had fibroids, my biggest complaint was the bleeding and I wanted nothing left that will bleed!

There was a fabulous thread here touting the terrific no-cervix sex I wish I could link you too. It was very reassuring. It's too soon for me to comment, but I'm hopeful!!
