Bowel Prep / Clear Liquid Diet?

Hi everyone, I'm new here and will be having a robot assisted hyst on March 1.

My doctor has told me that the day before surgery I need to do a bowel prep by taking 4 Dulcolax Laxitves at 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm do 10 oz of liquid CHILLED Magnesium citrate, and the same at 5:00 pm. Honestly this sounds worse than the surgery itself!

I need to do clear liquids the entire day - nothing red or orange. Any tips on what I can and cannot have?

Jello...? Popsicles? Juices?

I'm totally nervous about this, but everyone keeps telling me "you'll be fine".

Le Sigh.. breathing deeply....

Re: Bowel Prep / Clear Liquid Diet?

Here is an article on the topic that you might find helpful: Liquid Diet -- What Can I Eat?

For my bowel preps that included a liquid diet and no red, I mostly ate blue Jello Jigglers (since you have to chew them you can make yourself think you are actually eating!), Beef broth and/or consume, and blue Gatorade. Not a wide variety but then I had some sugar and salt and the Gatorade helped keep my electrolytes up. I did have some popsicles and water, too.

I won't lie, bowel prep with liquid diet days are not the best ones and you can feel unsatisfied and even hungry. But you will make it! Try to eat or drink a little bit all day long and that can help.

My doctor suggested Italian ices.

Re: Bowel Prep / Clear Liquid Diet?

OOOO, 052188 that sounds good. I never thought of Italian ice. I'm not looking forward to the bowl prep either but will do it with a grimacing smilie on my face, and my husband will stand in the kitchen with me as I drink, laughing. LOL

He keeps telling me to "open my throat and shoot it like a shot" Hi, don't drink, don't know how to do that, thank you honey. and he laughs as I continue to make faces. I love him so. (snot that he is) I know that he will take above required care as I recover from surgery. <3

Do the best you can and have magazines, music, a book, and a do not disturb sign or "This Bathroom is RESERVED" so everyone knows to not use it cause once that stuff starts to work, well stay close to the bathroom including obstacles.

Good luck.

Re: Bowel Prep / Clear Liquid Diet?

I'm not sure but maybe you can make your own Jello with maybe pineapple juice or apple juice. It may taste better than regular Jello. I'm going to have to do a prep too in my future so this helps me think of my options too. I hope it all goes well with you.

Re: Bowel Prep / Clear Liquid Diet?

I had to drink 4L of the fabulous (sarcasm sign) refrigerated Golytely. I flavored it with Crystal Light at my doctor's suggestion (I didn't have the restriction on red/orange colored things). I was supposed to drink 8oz every 10 minutes. My suggestion is to use a straw and suck a lemon drop afterwards. Eventually, I didn't even care about the lemon drop. I just wanted to get it over with. That said, it was not as bad as being sick with diarrhea. At least I knew why things were happening and that it WOULD stop eventually!

Re: Bowel Prep / Clear Liquid Diet?

My restrictions are nothing red, blue or purple! I only like strawberry banana jello and that is red :-( I am very nervous about surviving the 170mg of Miralax, fleet enema, 4 dulcolax and the Flagyl. makes me sick just thinking about it.

Is Ginger Ale considered a clear beverage?? I can't drink Gatorade-I throw it up every time.

Re: Bowel Prep / Clear Liquid Diet?

You're right, the prep is the worst part!

Honestly, you're to nervous to bother eating or drinking. :-P I know not funny, sorry! But it feels better to have a plan.

From the Mayo Clinic website: Water, Fruit juices without pulp, such as apple juice, grape juice or cranberry juice, Clear, fat-free broth, Clear sodas, Plain gelatin >blegh!<, Ice pops without bits of fruit or fruit pulp,
Tea or coffee without milk or cream.
