Surgery prep question

Hi all!

I am scheduled in about 2 weeks for a TLH.
I was given a sheet by the surgery scheduler that said I am to quit taking the usual OTC meds (advil, aspirin) and herbal supplements now. However, when I saw my GP last week (for a back injury related to a car accident I was just involved in) she said to stop taking those things from 7-10 days before surgery. So which way do I go?
I do take ibuprofen for my pain from the fibroids/cramping I have since I've had my period since Dec of last year. I also take vitamins to help keep my levels up. Do they count as "herbal supplements'?
Thanks!

Re: Surgery prep question

I'd call whoever is doing the surgery and ask. I had to stop everything 10 days before....ibuprofen and vitamins were included.

Re: Surgery prep question

You must follow the instructions of the surgeon. And yes, both Ibuprofen and many vitamins have to be stopped prior to surgery as they can cause bleeding risks.

The best thing to do is make a list of everything you take from prescriptions to over the counter meds like Ibuprofen and all supplements, vitamins, and herbs. Then call your surgeon's office and have them tell you specifically which ones to stop when.

For my last surgery, I was asked to bring my list and the NP went over every single item. It has been a few years but I some of what I remember I had to stop taking two weeks before surgery were my multivitamin, Vitamin E, and my prescription anti-inflammatory. Of course, I was told not to take any Ibuprofen or Aspirin.

Re: Surgery prep question

I had a big list of things to stop taking 2 weeks before surgery. I quit everything except occasional Tylenol and vitamin C once or twice. I even gave up all of my herbal teas.

Re: Surgery prep question

What about Extra Strength Tylenol / Acetaminophen? Is that okay to take? My pre-op is not until the day before my surgery. Anything else that I should no to do/not do? Thanks!

Re: Surgery prep question

And oh, what about cold/cough medicine? I have had a cough with congestion, thankfully it is almost all gone, but am still taking a little medicine to get rid of the lingering congestion.

Re: Surgery prep question

Tylenol is normally okay but each woman should check with her doctor before taking any medications, supplements, herbs, etc. at least 14 days prior to surgery. Surgery can be cancelled and/or complications can occur if meds are taken too close to surgery. Dangers include problems with anesthesia, interactions with meds used during surgery, and bleeding concerns.

Re: Surgery prep question

I was told to get off over everything now. I take a lot of herbal remedies for various reasons. I was also told to stop drinking green tea. They told me if the anesthesiologist found out I took anything prior to surgery they would send me home. I went cold turkey as of yesterday and my surgery is scheduled for March 21. I don't want to have to wait any longer so I'm doing what I was told.

Re: Surgery prep question

Hmmm I was told to stop my iron 3 days before surgery, my Megestrol AC 1 day before and I wasn't told to stop my 2 BP meds til the day of. No one told me no ibuprofen. I haven't taken any in the last 5 days and my surgery is 5 days away...
