hysterectomy under spinal anaesthesia

I am exploring the possibility of having my hysterectomy under spinal anaesthesia as general anaesthesia is a bit risky due to me having muscular dystrophy. I would really appreciate hearing from any women who have had a hysterectomy under spinal anaesthesia particularly any who had an abdominal incision.

Re: hysterectomy under spinal anaesthesia

I've heard of women who have had a spinal anaesthetic so that the general anaesthetic doesn't have to be as deep, and they come out of it more quickly. I haven't heard of anyone having only the spinal.

Re: hysterectomy under spinal anaesthesia

I've had 2 c-sections with spinals and so wish my doctor would give me that option with my hyster rather than being put to sleep. The benefit of the spinal is full pain control for 12 hours. It does a fantastic job of staying on top of the pain. You also don't have to go to a recovery room after surgery because you're already alert and awake. So, you get to go straight to your room after surgery.

I had a panic attack during my 2nd c-section (I struggle with severe anxiety) and they simply added a nice anti anxiety medication to my IV that calmed me without making me feel loopy.

Both of my spinals were wonderful experiences. My first c-section I was put to sleep and it was awful. I had no pain control other than a morphine drip, which did nothing for the pain. I woke up feeling awful.

Re: hysterectomy under spinal anaesthesia

I had SAH with a spinal, then was sedated down, no intubation. I found the waking up process so much easier, and I felt better, sooner. I was tired but not groggy. The spinal lasted a few hours and helped in the transition to oral pain meds. I also had a pelvic block. At first I wasn't so sure about the spinal, but now I am so glad that's what they did.
