Re: Anxious about IV

I think it would be best to be honest with the drs and nurses and they will know what can be done..You are in charge of your body and if the arm is best for you, then say so. I know when my son had surgery they gave him a drink before starting IV's to relax him and it makes it so he doesnt remember all the negative things about the surgery and such..maybe you can ask for that?
I have thick skin and they actually broke a needle once. each time i have to do labs or something i always tell them i have thick skin before. Helps them to prepare before the fact.

Re: Anxious about IV

I have a severe vagel reaction to IV's. I have been known to vomit and pass out. I almost bled to death after my 2nd was born and they had to put in 4 different IV's to maximize the blood transfusions. It was traumatizing and has messed with my head when it comes to needles. So, I tell the nurse in advance I have to be laid down, on oxygen, tell them which vein in my arm, and have someone distract me. For me, the IV is the most terrifying part of any surgery. Don't be afraid to take charge. They are there to facilitate your patient care. Be an advocate for yourself. Hopefully all goes well.

Re: Anxious about IV

DRINK, Drink, Drink and then drink some more. You also can let them know what you prefer as well. But they will tell you if you're hydrated enough to get a good line with your hand.

Hang in there, you'll do fine.
