Re: General anesthesia or a spinal block?

I also forgot to say the minute I threw up, they gave me a shot of Phenegren and I passed out the rest of the day and didn't have any more problems with nausea!

The Phenegren shot is wonderful to know about, thank you. The more I think about doing the spinal the more in favor I am of doing it. A big thank you to everyone

Re: General anesthesia or a spinal block?

I don't ever let anyone mess with my spine! I've had 3 surgeries, and they always suggest it, and I adamantly say 'no way!' I have 0% chance of having spinal or nerve damage that way. It also freaks me out not to have any feeling below the waist. Just a personal thing. Never had any issues except a little nausea the first time.

Re: General anesthesia or a spinal block?

I felt the same way years back when I had the opportunity to have it done. I felt it was too new of a proceedure as well as being terified of needles. For me I believe enough time has passed for the proceedure to be safe and I'm willing to give it a shot.

Re: General anesthesia or a spinal block?

The spinal block made me numb from the waist down and was wearing off by the time I woke up from sedation. I was wiggling my toes in recovery before I was taken to my room. The pelvic block was injected specifically into that area while I was still out and did not wear off for 24 hours. I was able to walk, pee, etc. There was an anti-nausea med in my IV as I was wheeled into the OR.

Re: General anesthesia or a spinal block?

Beth L, Was the sedation you were given the same as general anesthesia? I don't think it was but never hurts to ask. I would love to have what you had and be able to wiggle my toes in recovery and have the pelvic block for 24 hours. It just sounds so much better.

Re: General anesthesia or a spinal block?

It was not general anesthesia, there was no intubation. Overall I woke up faster and was much less groggy than after my first surgery which involved general anesthesia. Your Dr may do it differently so I would ask your Dr and clarify exactly what their anesthesia team does.

Re: General anesthesia or a spinal block?

Had my pre op appointment today. I spoke with my Dr about my concerns and I'll be doing anesthesia & spinal block that will last 23 to 24 hours. I'm looking forward to getting it over with and pass the healing point.
