Question about my Ovaries

Hi all,

I was really curious about one thing. I'm going in for a TAH on April 5th and although both ovaries are polycystic (PCOS dx 2007), my doctor is opting to keep them to avoid surgical menopause as I am only 31, and other than the cysts they are healthy.

My question is this -
Since the hyster will take away my period (YAY), what will happen with ovulation? Will I still ovulate? What's going to happen with the eggs?

Forgot to ask my dr that, of course. Also - they are going to cauterize the existing cysts in an effort to level out the hormones. Won't this continue though? I want the nasty hair to go away and I don't see how that's going to happen with the ovaries still there.

Re: Question about my Ovaries

I have my pre op appointment on 3/5. I have this on my page long list of things to ask my doctor. He told me previously that one ovary has a cyst so most likely that one will be removed but I could keep the other one.

I have tremendous amounts of facial hair and weight problems, if having them completely gone means I wont have these issues then take them out is my thought.

I would call your doctor and ask them or put it on a list of things to ask at your pre op appointment.

Good Luck!

Re: Question about my Ovaries

I kept my overies and for the first couple of months I could tell when I was supposed to have my period. i would get all the food cravings, bloating and irratability, everything minus the pain, bleeding and being miserable. Now that I am almost 6 months out I have noticed less symptoms but still have the feeling of being bloated sometimes. I think the overies still produce eggs but since they have no where to go your body absorbes them. i could be completely wrong but that is my thought on it.

Re: Question about my Ovaries

I believe Melly is correct - you will still ovulate even though your uterus is gone.
