Hysterectomy scheduled for March 15th

Hello Ladies, I am new here. Have been looking over the forums for the last couple days and just think this is such a great site. My hysterectomy is scheduled for March 15th. 10 days to go. I am excited but also a bit nervous. This is all happening so fast it is hard to really get my mind around it. I went to the Er on the 24th of Feb. I have always had terrible periods but this one was much worse than normal, and honestly I was scared. After the hospital released me I went to see the Dr they had reffered me to. While giving me the internal he had me place my hand on my stomach, I was in shock!! The size of the fibroid was insane. I also have others but they are much smaller. we started discussing my options and we decided that a hysterectomy would be best. I didn't know when i would be able to schedule it for so he gave me a shot of Depo to help me out till I could get the surgery done. I don't have insurance and I was going to have to discuss it with my husband. Luckily my husband agreed and I was able to give the dr the money required for his services. I will be sooooo happy to not be in pain all the time. I feel that I have been a prisoner in my body for the last 5 yrs. So I am excited to have it done with but also nervous, the dr says he will leave the ovaries if they look okay, I am praying they do. I really don't want to have to go on hormones so i am hoping I can keep them. I wanted to ask if anyone has ever been given the Depo shot before, Since getting it I have started cramping and feel like I am going to get another period!! I have just finished my period 3 days ago, but my body is telling me it's coming back!! I don't know if thats a side effect?? I was hoping this last period would be my last!! My main concern in all of this is the recovery time. I am worried about being laid up a long time, truthfully I am afraid my husband will forget to feed me!! J/K well kinda My husband works a lot and I take care of everything around the house, cleaning, cooking, shopping....... So I am not sure what is going to happen with me laid up in bed. I have a feeling I am going to be eating a lot of Big Macs One last question, what is a belly pillow??? Thank you all for taking the time to read this....

Re: Hysterectomy scheduled for March 15th

I did not have fibroids or depro so I can not say on those items..
First Off so glad you were able to make this happen... You are going to feel better when it is all done..

A body pillow is an extra long pillow that allows you to hug it with your whole body. Great for recovery if you are a side sleeper.

Hey Big Macs are not that bad (at least it is food). I survived on canned pears and apple sauce because that is all my tummy could handle. Maybe have canned food that are pop top near your bed with a trash can for empty cans...
Good Luck

Re: Hysterectomy scheduled for March 15th

I feel you girl! We will be having our surgeries the same day, so I'll send some happy vibes your way!
I also have been trying depo to control bleeding and pain, and in my experience it always takes 2 rounds to get any relief. The first shot I would bleed and cramp like crazy, tapered down with the 2nd shot 13 weeks later and would be better by the 3rd... 26 weeks for any relief though! Lipton did wonderful things while I wait for surgery, except for the hot flashes....
Anyway, don't expect it to work too well since you are just getting the one, but Whoo hoo, we are done with this gory, gruesome awful chapter in a few short days!
Keep us posted, and hang in there, HisterSister!

Hopefully, you will be so well medicated for pain, you will be able to sleep on your head! Don't worry!

A belly pillow is a pillow you can put on your belly when you laugh, cough, sneeze, ride in a car (under your seat belt), etc. I got a cute pillow pet who has been my constant companion through my recovery. I keep it on my belly to keep my cats from walking across me, too.

Re: Hysterectomy scheduled for March 15th

I am about 11 days post op here. I had a LAVH and a BSO I had fibroids, cysts, and a progesterone allergy, so I can't take the depo shot. I had it once and bled for 4 months with only a day or so break, so it is possible for yours to be coming back. I sleep on my side as well and I did it like day one or two, I kept myself elevated a bit with a pillow under each side though so I wasn't so stretched and so there was cushion under me. As far as food if your hubby can't take time off seriously some snack food by you or even a cooler on the bed where you will be staying would be nice. I ate a lot of Ritz crackers after mine, but you could also put some drinks in the cooler and just have your hubby change it later. I hope your surgery goes well for you! Good luck!!
