Re: Why are you getting your hysterectomy?

I am getting my hysterectomy due to fibroids and cysts all over my L ovary. I had an ablation last year and while it gave me relief from flooding periods for 5 months (a wonderful 5 monhs - I won't pretend it wasn't), by the 6th month, I had cramping and soon afterward, the flooding returned along with excruciating pain. At first it was cycle-related, but now, 10 months post-ablation, it's constant, both bleeding and pain. Prior to all of this, I had my first period at 13, cysts from 14 onward (controlled mostly with BCP and Depo) and a ruptured 15 week ectopic in my R tube at 25, followed by 2 more ectopics in my R tube at 26 and 27. The thrid and final pregnancy resulted in removal of my R tube and a test that determined my L tube was blocked. No idea why. By 36, my periods were getting unmanageable - flooding for 2 days and then 8 more days of moderate flow. I became anemic. Prior to this, my cycles were light and maybe 3-4 days. So, my specialist wanted to try ablation. Which I did at 37. It failed and so here I am. My first ultrasound this year showed one cyst on my L ovary. A follow-up ultrasound 3 weeks later revealed a scar where the cyst had been, and 4 more in its place! Also noted were fibroids that were not found just 3 weeks earlier. This was last month. TAH scheduled that day for March 22. I don't know what to think of all of this...just want it over...meh...

Re: Why are you getting your hysterectomy?

My road to hysterectomy was sudden and unexpected. I went for my yearly pap smear & the Dr. suggested I get a vaginal ultrasound just to routinely check my ovaries. A polyp was found and a D & C showed hyperplasia of the uterus with atypical cells. I got several opinions & the consensus was to get everything out because it could lead to cancer. I wanted to keep my ovaries since they were still working & I knew how losing them can effect bone density, sex drive & bring on surgical menopause. But because I am no longer child bearing age, I was told to get ovaries & cervix out, too. It seemed like overkill to me, but I figured why risk it?

Re: Why are you getting your hysterectomy?

My surgery is for prolapse, fibroids, and suspected adenomyosis. All I have to say is that the author who suggested hysterectomy as a way to evade the nuisance of our periods has never had to endure a 53 day period!!!! Interfering with our leisure activities. I don't remember what leisure activities are anymore...unless they consider half hour trips to the bathroom to change tampons and pads a leisure activity now!!!

Re: Why are you getting your hysterectomy?

Haha! Leisure activities to change tampons and pads every hour!! Hilarious! And so NOT hilarious :/ Boy, do I know that. past time all too well. I think anybody that thinks considering a hysterectomy is an easy decision obviously has no idea what these issues are like and how they affect quality of life. I have tried everything I know plus some...this is my last resort (insert Papa Roach song here). It is risky, but the risk is nothing compared to another 10-15 years of what I consider at this point to be a disability. But people are entitled to their own opinions...and I am entitled to disagree. And I do. Disagree, that is. Meh...

Re: Why are you getting your hysterectomy?

7 days and counting ! Been waiting 10 years for this..heavy periods and severe cramping from the start (13). When they got to be 20-27 days long the quest began. have been on at least 9 differant birth control pills... 8yrs ago my dr found 4 fibriods and was given a series of shots for 3months to reduce them. The best 10 months of my life followed.. no period... but it came back with a vengence.... couldnt go far from home during my period .. I think Iknow where every restroom is within a 15 mile radius of my home. tried the mirena iud for 4 yrs helped reduce my period to 7-10 days...when it failed my dr suggested an endrometrial ablation.. had that in 2010.... I was 2 in 28 that still had their period.. by oct of 2011 I was back to 15 day periods became severely anemic and was put on yet another pill.... yasmin 90 day... was only supposed to get my period every 90 days. HA I started my period on 12/16 and it was continuous until march 8, 2012.. (hemotoligist said I need to fix my leak (after getting iron infusions) and sent me to the gyn...so here I am ... having an abdonminal hysterectomy, leaving the ovaries.... looking foward to my surgery and praying it opens a new chapter in my life.... it should be so freeing

Re: Why are you getting your hysterectomy?

I started having very irregular periods a year and a half ago. The timing between them ranged from 14 to 24 days. Last fall I tried three months of a low estrogen pill with the hopes that it would regulate my periods.
After the pill my periods went from 25 days to 21 days to 14 days with no guarantee exactly when it would start. They have also become very heavy and lasting longer and longer each time. I have also always had small clots but since being on the pill I have had clots that are the size of baseballs and look like beef liver.
My family Dr. suggested the Novasure procedure and referred me to a ob/gyn to discuss that. After talking with the ob/gyn, and finding out the Novasure procedure did not give more than a 50% chance of working on the irregular periods but would make them lighter I opted for the hysterectomy. I am 42 and have no desire to have anymore children and feel this is a good decision on my part.

Re: Why are you getting your hysterectomy?

kimg....if you are on the fence about whether or not to keep your ovaries, along with in-depth discussions with your Dr...I strongly recommend signing up for the research study option on the home page. I had no idea what risks come with both taking and leaving them. It was a very eye opening and reassuring experience for me. If the decision is yours then by all means sign up for it. You won't be sorry! Best of luck to you!
