Re: Why are you getting your hysterectomy?

LittleStar31, I found the study and signed up for it. Thank you. How long was it before they contacted you? My surgery is this coming Wednesday.
I have spent the last few days reading about the choices I have and I have also talked with friends who are nurses about thier opinion on it. But I am still up in the air. Some moments I am like lets just get rid of them and then the next I want to keep.
Thank you Again, and good luck on your upcoming surgery!

Re: Why are you getting your hysterectomy?

Kim...I emailed and called. The woman's name is Shirley Wong. Very nice and the study made me solid in my belief...and I stress the word "my"...to keep my ovaries. I am 45 but all done with kids and so not ready for menopause...although it seems a toss up to what I've been going through. The benefits for me, far out-weigh the risks. I would like to recover from this and deal with menopause in it's own good time...which for my Mom was mid to late 50's. I can't recall how quickly I heard back maybe a day or two but I would re-contact with the date of your surgery if that was not already stated. My Dr left the decision up to me...as long as the ovaries were healthy they could stay if I wanted them. I had no idea how low the risk of cancer was in comparison to the whole ordeal of surgical menopause. But again I must stress...it is an extremely personal decision and must not be entered into lightly. After completing the study I was very secure in my decision to keep (hopefully) at least one of my ovaries. However, this decision could be out of my hands if once they get in there they find something wrong. Good luck to you....I am sure we will feel so much better once we have this behind us.

Re: Why are you getting your hysterectomy?

i am having my hysterectomy for pain and heavy bleeding. Have had 8 LEEPS in 6 years also have never had a normal pap. My surgery is scheduled for March 28, 2012. I am only 31 and scared about this whole thing, but I know that this is the best option for me as nothing else has helped.

Re: Why are you getting your hysterectomy?

Why am I getting mine? Vengeance! My uterus has never been my friend. Cramps started soon after I first got my period, many times so bad that I wished for death. I finally discovered Aleve in college, then no more of that! Always had headaches as well, finally realized they were tied to my period, then they gravitated to the whole month. Always had regular periods, and although sometimes heavy, nothing anywhere near your stories. Finally get married at 34, can't get pregnant. Dx with PCOS at that time, had and ex. lap. found & a tiny fibroid on one ovary, tons of scarring on both ovaries, and pelvic adhesions. Nothing blocking anything, so no real reason besides PCOS for not getting pregnant. We've adopted 4 kids in the last 7 years, so all is well in that arena Anyway, periods got heavier and longer. So many accidents at night until I discovered Infinity pads, and thankfully that took care of that (do I sound like a commercial or what?) So many clots it made me sick, just yuck. Put on huge doses of prometrium 10 days a cycle, which made my periods *much* better, cramps almost non-existent, although shortened it down to 24 days. Been jumping through hoops to keep it all under control, then at my last pelvic exam my Dr said my uterus felt 'full. Fibroids run in my family, so I knew what that meant. U/s confirmed it, and the next day my doc is talking about a hyst. Even though I have no ties to my uterus, it was still shocking, and all of the emotions, etc, that all of us have been talking about. I had all sorts of side effects from fibroids that I had just gotten used to. My left ovary gives me a lot of discomfort and had a couple of very painful burst cysts, so that one will go to. I will be THRILLED to not have periods any more, and I think my uterus deserves as much for being nothing but a pain my whole life, but still not easy to deal with. Once it's over and all is well, and weird things don't happen because of the surgery, then all will be well

Re: Why are you getting your hysterectomy?

Kim, you seem to be as close to what I'm dealing with as anybody else. Compared to what others are going through I feel like mine is just for the experience.

I have had regular periods with the usual cramps and aches with the day or 2 of heavy gushes that put ya through a super plus tampon and overnight pad (together) within 15 minutes. Then about 2 1/2 years ago I had a period that never went away. I would have a few days of nothing then out of the blue bleeding again. Having a hysterectomy was mentioned at the time but the family dr. sent me to a gyno instead to decide what to do. So I was recommended to have an ablation as I cannot take bc pills due to blood pressure issues. I had one but within 6 months here comes the bleeding again. However, I never had the cramps/aches and the bleeding was much lighter. It went from spotting to filling 2 pads in a day. I have been dealing with this now for over a year so the gyno said I don't need to deal with it as it may be years yet before I hit menopause. (I lost my mom to breast cancer when she was 49 and my 53 year old sister is still dealing with awful periods so hard to know when my family's history would put me.)

So I guess you could say that my reason is for quality of life. And my gyno seems to think I deserve it....or is it because he's the one doing the surgery? Haha. (Honestly, I have really thought that too.)

Re: Why are you getting your hysterectomy?

Little Star, yes I heard back about the study, watched the video and did my follow up questions today. So I have made an informed decision in regards in regards to having my ovaries removed. (I have an aunt ( my mother's sister) who died from ovarian cancer last june)
I am doing ok, woke up wishing I had my mother here to talk to about everything (she died 5 1/2 years ago from colon cancer). So feeling really tearful. I want to thank you for asking and how are you?

Trico, good luck.

I am on count down. 34.5 hours left with my uterus..... lol

Re: Why are you getting your hysterectomy?

Did you find the study helpful? Are they (ovaries) staying or going? Just curious. Sorry that your Mom is no longer with you. If it is any consolation, mine is being a huge pain in the rump. If I tell her I went out walking she tells me I should rest and when I say I don't feel that well she tells me to get out of bed! ARRRGGHHHH! My bleeding has slowed wish I could say the same for the cramping and holy cannoli...the hem's are causing a ruckus. Doc's just shake their heads at this point...the bleeding from the hems was a little scary but fingers crossed that today is a good day. First day of Spring and it's going to be 75 here in New England...going to throw the little one in her carriage and get some fresh air. Do you have everything you need for tomorrow? What time do you have to be there? You are going to do great and will be so relieved to have this behind you. I am here if you need me along with countless others. Relax today and do something nice for yourself...a manicure or pedicure or go out for an ice cream! Live a little...after all you are a princess!

Re: Why are you getting your hysterectomy?

I am pretty definite they are going. And thank you. I am spending the day with my two youngest today, (5 and 7), and did a little grocery shopping so thier dad can fix food at least for the next couple of days. I decided this morning I wasn't going to worry about anymore housework and try and get into a mindset of resting (ugh that is going to be hard).
I was told that I had to remove all nail polish but am taking some with me in the hopes that tomorrow sometime someone will put it back on after surgery.
It is a cloudy, cool day here in Kansas and will probably go take a nice long walk this evening just to clear my head and mentally finish preparing for tomorrow.
Thank you so very much, And I will see you on the other side

Re: Why are you getting your hysterectomy?

It's time for Dad to show off his culinary skills! I bought lot's of "instant" foods....nothing too complicated. Frozen pizza, scrambled eggs, makings for french toast....not going to be a very healthy time but I'll make sure they get fruit for dessert! Treat yourself to little things that you like for me I got Almond M & M's, green apples, pumpkin seeds and Newman's lemonade. Have to cover all tastes...sweet,sour.salty and bitter. Activia yogurt for upset stomach and constipation and some watermelon italian ice. Gingerale and cranberry juice in case of bladder issues and I think I am all set. Do you know how long you will be at the castle? I promised the little ones that next Thursday we will have a Wii marathon...boxing, tennis, baseball, bowling, Sing it and Just Dance...sounds exhausting!!! Just remember to breathe and to be good to yourself...it will be over before you know it and you will be wondering why you waited so long! That's my prediction...
