Re: Anxiety and fear...??

Hi Rosemary, I had my DvH on February 17th so I am three weeks out. I run a business also but have good long term employees. One week is very unrealistic. I have only been to my office twice during these three weeks and then my husband drove me in for a few hours. I have dealt with some issues over the phone, but am physically and mentally not ready to return to work on a regular basis. The waiting is the hardest part, but the recovery time is very important since you only have one chance to heal correctly without complications. The fatigue has really surprised me. You have to remember that you will be going through a major surgery and need to take some time for yourself. I will be praying for a successful surgery and recovery for you.

Wow 3 weeks out and you are still fatigue? Are you saying that, working,in,front,of computor and dealing, with problems is going to be difficult? Is the pain tolerable? How long were you on,pain pills?

Re: Anxiety and fear...??

The doctor will give you a prescription for pain meds when you're discharged from hospital. The pain is very tolerable if you take your pain meds regularly. You will be uncomfortable/exhausted/sore/emotional though. The first week its an accomplishment to have a shower. The fatigue will be with you for a while. 3 weeks post op is still considered the very early stages of recovery. It takes about 6 months to get to 80% and a year or so to be 100%.

It's a marathon, not a sprint

Re: Anxiety and fear...??

Hello, and big hugs to you all who are pre-op. There are so many variables, and people react differently to this surgery and the meds. My doctor explained this to me, as I had virtually no pain after I got home, and kind of wondered why? He said he sees many women each week, and the recoveries are so different for each of them. Just as our conditions necessitating the hysterectomy are varied, so will our recoveries, in general.
But, the common thing is that we're strong and we have doctors and nurses who are good at what they do - so, we can get through this. Ask questions, be as prepared as you can, and try to do some relaxing things to help yourself.
Afterwards, you will be slower. That and being tired seem to be pretty common, so expect to take it easy for awhile. The pain, the bathroom problems, the emotional rollercoaster - those are things that seem to really vary around here. Not everyone will have the same experience, but after your surgery, you will be able to find others who you can relate to - so come back and share your story. There will be lots of support and warmth for you here.
Wishing you the best!!

I think you could plan to be available by phone and/or computer - though if you're on heavy meds you might want to think twice about it!
I didn't take any pain meds past the second day - they made me feel weird and I didn't feel I needed them. Continued Advil and Tylenol for a bit afterwards - just in case.
The fatigue is strange - it's not like typical tiredness I've ever experienced before. It hits all of the sudden, and you just need to sit or recline - not necessarily sleep. Does that make sense?

Re: Anxiety and fear...??

Yes and thank you for the, information. I have a better understanding. I dont like, pain medication so the sooner,i get off them i know, the better off i will be. I will take motrin and try to slowly get back,to work. Even if i work two hours and take, two, hours,to,rest. I am most concerned about the pain and hope i can tolerate it.

My surgery is Monday. I feel the same way. Emotions are all over the place. I am really trying to hold it together. I know it's the right thing to do just its just very scary. I have never had surgery and the fear of the unknown. Good luck to you and prayers for a peaceful week and a good recovery.
Rosemary333 I am with you 10am Monday morning. Good luck.

Re: Anxiety and fear...??

Ladies - This is a scary process but the anticipation is worse than the actual surgery or recovery. As I said, the fatigue has really surprised me the most. The pain has been very tolerable. I only took pain pills for a few days. Now I take an occasional Motrin. I have worked from home on the phone and computer some but really need to get enough rest. Take a deep breath - you will do fine! I will be thinking about you on Monday. Take care and keep us posted.
