Re: Weight loss anyone after Hysterectomy???

Traeleigh,
It sounds like you know a lot about weight loss vs weight gain with a hysterectomy. I have a large cyst and 2 large fibroids and will probably have a da vinci hysterectomy. One of my biggest concerns is gaining weight - I had 2 C-sections and an appendectomy and about 15 lbs after each one. I don't want more weight gain and I have mostly heard about weight gain not weight loss with hysterectomies. Do you know any statistics on this? Do I at least have a 50% chance of staying or dropping weight?

Re: Weight loss anyone after Hysterectomy???

I have yet to schedule my surgery. We are waiting for biopsy results to make sure my fibroids are not cancerous. My doc told me that my uterus is currently the size of soccer ball (about 20 weeks pregnant) He said most of my "gut" is because of the size of my uterus and I will have a much flatter belly once we do surgery. I was calculating today that I have put on about 3 lbs a month since November and my diet and exercise never changed during that time, so I'm thinking its because of the fibroids. I laughed and told him if he's right, I'll be sending him a picture of me in a 2 piece bathing suit this summer. He's hoping to be able to do my surgery with the da Vinci method so no belly scar will be awesome!!!

JFitz89...

I dont have any specific statistics about weight loss or weight gain, but would be happy to research that a bit for you if you would like me to. You might check out this article relating to this topic...there is a lot of good information here:

Let me know if you want me to dig deeper on this.

Re: Weight loss anyone after Hysterectomy???

My body is definitely not reacting to weight watchers the way it did before. I have been an at goal lifetime member for well over a year. I have taken myself back to the number of points that has ALWAYS allowed me a loss of 1.5 - 2 lbs per week. I have been following the plan for 5 weeks and have not lost anything significant. I have not gained either, but still. I have my ovaries so am kind of shocked. The worry is that if I was eating my amount of maintenance points I would most likely gain. I eat very very healthy but seem to be on a plateau. It's a bit upsetting. Something has changed in my hormones, no doubt!

Re: Weight loss anyone after Hysterectomy???

I've lost 2 kg in 4 months, my BMI is about 19. My appetite is smaller. I'm not exercising as often as I did pre-op, it tires me out if I do too much.

Re: Weight loss anyone after Hysterectomy???

I am 10 days post op. My appetite is low and I fill quickly. I find my full stomach "sits heavily" on everything below and can be uncomfortable if I eat more than just a few ounces of food.

I also am using this as a "reset" of some habits. I am really trying to pay attention to my body/ stomach when I eat. I am trying to notice when my stomach has had enough even tho I might want to continue to eat what is on my plate. I have been making a point to stop and take note and have not been over eating and not getting that heavy belly feeling.
day of surg I weighed in at 130 lbs, 2 days after surg I was 138! I am back to 130 now. I'm guessing the gain was the 4 bags of iv fluids. I know I am not taking in as many calories as I used to per day, but I am also not being active enough to burn anything off (or need much more).
good luck with your journey
davinci surgery for endo ca, took it all and some nodes for good measure. I am now considered cured. no further treatment.

Re: Weight loss anyone after Hysterectomy???

Thanks Traeleigh -
I wish I could be a size 2 or size 8. I am 5'10" and was thin as a bean pole all of my life until I had 3 kids - now the weight keeps going up - 50+ lbs in 15 years. I am very concerned my hysterectomy is going to continue sending me in the wrong direction. It is hard to work fulltime and manage a household of 3 kids then eat right and exercise too.

Thanks for the article.

I don't really know what else to research - I think it is mostly hard work and persistence to lose the weight.

Thanks for the feedback - I am jealous of your weight loss.

Re: Weight loss anyone after Hysterectomy???

I am 2 was post op and have lost 11 lbs, I had a uterus the size of a volley ball n fibroids the size of grapefruits. Uterus & fibroids weighed3.5 lbs. My belly is flatter even wen I have a swelly bell. I don't look pregnant anymore. I too don't have an appetite & wen I do eat it's very, very lil. So far no regrets & hope I keep up with the weight loss. Prior to surgery I couldn't lose weight even with weight watchers help (in the past I had lost 30 lbs).

Don't be discouraged yet...you never know how things are going to turn out for you. My weight loss came from a complete lack of appetite. You might be surprised how good you feel after this surgery...you might just find yourself exercising more and eating healthier without even realizing it. I think I said this before, but I don't crave candy and cookies like I did before surgery, now when I do have cravings it is for fruits or veggies. When I'm bored (and not on here), I don't take a nap or watch TV, I go for a walk. I was never like that before. Sometimes I think they took out my appetite and wired me different while they were in there.

I hope you are able to lose the weight you want to lose!!
