Meeting with Surgeon on Friday

Hi ladies,

Just looking for some place to get some of my thoughts out.

I've seen two ob/gyns and the first recommended hysterectomy due to my large fibriod (I can feel it when I touch my abdomen). My second opion doc is one of the best in the country at a top hospital. I'm very petite and this fibroid is not -- 9cm according to my MRI and hard as a freakin' rock that's putting pressure on other organs. I'm young, no kids, but my quality of life is so poor that I have to do something. Both docs said I wasn't the best candidate for myomectomy. I'm tired of dealing with this. I have to get IV iron infusions to keep my blood count up -- my hemoglobin was below 7, which is terrible and in the transfusion range. I miss work due to pain and having to be next to a bathroom all day. Nevertheless, as you all know this is still a difficult decision and it is coming at a very stressful time in my life. I meet with the surgeon on Friday. I will have my exact surgery date. Thanks for allowing me to vent as I just try to get through this week...

Re: Meeting with Surgeon on Friday

Been there sweetie! It got so bad my blood pressure was barely at conscious level, and I've had 3 transfusions. I have no fibroids, but they believe I have adeno. I'm also tiny, and my uterine enlargement makes me look a few months pregnant, no matter how much exercise. Also, I have bowel problems and severe back pain and sciatica from the pelvic muscle spasms resulting from this evil uterus!
It took me years to get to the point of saying enough is enough. I'm not even 30 yet, and I have a life to keep up with. Pain or bleeding 3-4 days per week is 5-6 months per year! Half a life spent in misery! You are doing the right thing! Stay with this site because the women here will hold your hand the whole way! Thay are wonderful! It's a huge, hard step, and we need all the love we can get! Hugs!

Re: Meeting with Surgeon on Friday

Been there too! I had a big fibroid (10mm) and two smaller ones but I didn't want a hysterectomy as I was hoping to have a child. I had a myomectomy and it went ok - even though my iron level was even lower than yours and they had to give me two transfusions during the op. Post op I felt good - normal periods, light flow, no more accidents.... it was wonderful! Unfortunately my analyses showed that I had some pre-cancer cells and I ended up having to have a hysterectomy (best way to keep me alive!). This however is very rare! If you can I would go for a myomectomy - doctors push hysterectomies too much in my opinion. It depends of course on your quality of life and how much you want to have a child, but at least be sure that they look at all options and take your opinions seriously. This is a big decision and I wish you lots of luck.
