How long on pain meds?

Hi~I am new here at 1 week post op and wondering what the average length of time to require pain meds from a TAH?

I hate to take meds, but find that without the prescribed Percocet, I have a hard time with pain. Doctor told me to use Percocet in combination with Advil and I would like to know if others are using this and how do you dose? Should I be taking the ibuprofen between doses of Percocet or together? Please give me a clue and about how long I will be needing meds to be comfortable?

Re: How long on pain meds?

I had a TVH on the 8th. Percocet did nothing for me. When I got home, I started taking over the counter Motrin...3 every 6hrs (3 equals 600mg, which is the same as a prescription your doc would call in). Totally took my cramping away. You may need something additional since you have outside stitches though. Try to Motrin by itself and see if it works.

Re: How long on pain meds?

I just got another 30 qty refill. I was apprehensive about asking, but she was like, "sure we will call it right in!"

Re: How long on pain meds?

I was given Percocet and Naproxen (Naprosyn, or over the counter Alieve), and the Naproxen seemed to help me better than the Percocet. Plus, I don't have the foggy feeling Percocet gives me. In the hospital, they gave them to me together, but here at home, I take one or the other, not both together. Hope this helps. Feel better!

Re: How long on pain meds?

I was taking pandol 2 every 4 hours and ibuprofen 3 times a day, which has taken all my pain, I had TVH and Im a week out from having it done, In the last couple of days Ive been putting the pandol out too 6hourly. which is working fine,
do what feels right for you, thats the main thing. the nurse said to me, if your in pain, its gonna take longer to heal, your putting all your engery into dealin with the pain and not the healing

Re: How long on pain meds?

I am a little over 3 weeks out from a TAH, and I am taking about 1 Vicodin towards the end of the day, and 800mg Ibuprofen in the morning (mainly to help with incisional swelling, it does nothing for my pain). At my 2 week check my doctor was happy to give me more Vicodin. I would say for the first week I took the pills every 4 hours round the clock. Week two I cut back to 2-3 per day of the Vicodin. Now it is just towards the end of the day the pain becomes really bad and I need one.
I agree with a previous poster that pain can slow healing because it stresses out the body. Listen to your body and do what you need. If you can do without the pain pills, great. If you need them, take them. Remember, we all heal differently.
Going into week 4, I would say the most pain for me is from the incision site. I have found ice helps, as does plenty of rest.

Re: How long on pain meds?

Thanks Sisters
I called my doc's assistant after I posted yesterday and she got the message this morning. She suggested Vicoden and called in a scrip and when my Percocet runs out I will try that. Today I have taken 800 mg Ibuprofen at 8:30 am and another 800 mg at 4:40 pm and I am feeling OK .

I also soaked up a little vitamin D with the sun shining like mad here and that helped too...warm sunshine helps all pain diminish...

Tonight I will probably take some of the Percocet before bed and see what the morning feels like

Thanks for your encouragement! You all are the best medicine ever!

Re: How long on pain meds?

I took percocet every 4 hours and Ibprofin every 6 hours for about a week.. Then dropped to just the Ibprofin..
