Can you have vaginal removal if you remove the cervix as well?

I never thought to ask this and I am so glad that this was posted. I am scheduled to leave it, but since I have fibroids and heavy bleeding, maybe I should just have them take it. Can you still have a vaginal removal if you remove the cervix as well?

If you are having your uterus removed vaginally, than you are already scheduled to have your cervix removed. Since the cervix is the bottom portion of the uterus, it is delivered first!

As a side note, in some countries some doctors will put the cervix back in after a vaginal hysterectomy, but that typically is not done in the US, Canada, or the UK.

That is very good to know. I asked the nurse today and she said my chart shows I am having TVH with the cervix staying.

Something has been mixed up somewhere.

TVH stands for Total Vaginal Hysterectomy. Total means the total or complete uterus with the cervix will be removed whether it is done vaginally, abdominally, laparoscopically, or with the use of the daVinci robot.

If you were in Taiwan, you could have a Supracervical Vaginal Hysterctomy, meaning once the uterus was removed vaginally, the surgeon would then put the cervical portion (the bottom 1/3 of the uterus) back inside.

Please double check with your doctor's office to make sure of your hysterectomy type and what all will be removed and left.

You can click on Hysterectomy Options in the blue bar at the top of the screen to learn more about the various hysterectomy types, except the supracervical vaginal one since it is not typically performed in the US, Canada, or UK.

Please note you can have supracervical with laprascopy without going through the vagina (LSH), uterus is grounded and pulled out through the lap incisions. This is the process I had in Calif. Minimally invasive, and usually a shorter recovery time, depending on your circumstances. FYI..

There are indeed multiple ways to have a supracervical hysterectomy, but there are NOT multiple ways to have a supracervical VAGINAL hysterectomy. The issue in question is that (((rainkeepfalling))) has been told she is scheduled for a total vaginal hysterectomy, yet she has also been told she is keeping her cervix. That can't happen. If she were in another country, she might be able to have a vaginal hysterectomy and keep her cervix, but it still would not be the total vaginal hysterectomy for which she is scheduled, it would be a supracervical vaginal hysterectomy--something not typically done in the US, Canada, or the UK.

Thus, there is a miscommunication issue somewhere. She is either scheduled for the TVH and removal of the cervix, or she is scheduled for a supracervical hysterctomy of some type (abdominal, laparosocpic, daVinci) but there will not be vaginal involvement and she will keep her cervix.
