Fecal Impaction, 4 days Post-Op

I had some major issues yesterday with fecal impaction. I'm 4 days Post-Op now.

I do not think it was caused by the surgery or meds from the surgery. I think I might've actually had issues the night before the surgery.

Well, yesterday was my first BM for 4 days. It was very hard and clay-like.

Now I'm afraid that the straining could've hurt me on the inside. I just feel sore (my back does), but I'm still nervous about it.

I've been eating a high fiber diet and drinking lots of water, but now I'm just nervous because I haven't had the urge to go again.

Usually, if I eat honey and/or flaxseed, I have to go within the next hour, but that hasn't happened. Still no urge.

I'm worried that there might still be blockage and I am even thinking of getting an enema (never had one before).

I'm really just anxious. I don't want anything to go wrong. I've been doing so well, otherwise. I've been full of energies. But, apparently, that's not all I'm full of.... >_<

Any advice? Similar experiences?

Re: Fecal Impaction, 4 days Post-Op [Warning: TMI]

Bunni, my daughter suffered from fecal impaction when she was younger. After many ER visits, we finally got help. 2 enemas back to back, and the milk of magnesia 2x a day to keep stools soft until colon "unstretched". Talk w/ your dr! I hope you feel better soon

Before you use an enema, please call your doctor to make sure it is okay. Are you taking stool softeners? I was ordered to take them twice per day post op and continued for 4 weeks.

No, I was never told to take them. I read on my Post-Op sheet that I could take laxatives as desired, but laxatives have never really worked for me. Both natural and artificial laxatives (even extra strength) just make my tummy feel warm, but nothing happens.

I guess I was afraid a stool softener would do the same.

Re: Fecal Impaction, 4 days Post-Op [Warning: TMI]

Bunni, I had LAVH 3/6 and started taking stool softeners next day, colace 2x a day. I mixed prune juice with other juice (makes it tolerable). I had a BM 2 days later. Did you do a bowel cleansing before surgery? Impaction takes a while to happen. Don't panic. But I'd start softeners right away unless your dr feels otherwise.

Re: Fecal Impaction, 4 days Post-Op [Warning: TMI]

I just called-- I'm waiting on a call back.

I didn't do a bowel cleansing before. I wasn't asked to, but I sure should've done it.

I was definitely having problems for a couple days before surgery. I don't know if the anxiety blocked me up, but I know I was feeling really sick the night before and I remember telling my husband I felt nauseated, but I knew that if I could just have a bowel movement, I would feel better. This used to happen to me all the time in my early 20s, but I guess I haven't been as anxious as I was then.

I've been eating stuff like oatmeal, flaxseed, and honey. Usually flaxseed and honey yield immediate results, but not this time. I don't even feel the urge.

I don't know why some drs require the bowel prep and others don't...

Have you heard from your dr?

Re: Fecal Impaction, 4 days Post-Op

The nurse who was present during the operation called me back. She told me that it's normal for bowels to shut down for a bit after surgery. She recommended a stool softener (Colace) although my husband had already bought Dulcolax because his grandmother (who was a nurse) recommended it before we got the call back.

She said not to worry that I'm not having bowel movements as normal-- that it should get back to normal within a few days. She also recommended milk of magnesia, if the stool softener doesn't do the trick.

I need to call back, though, if I experience the issue that I did before.

Re: Fecal Impaction, 4 days Post-Op

BTW-- it's probably a good idea to bowel prep before surgery b/c, as I said, I believe this was a problem before the surgery, just exacerbated by the surgery.

It might not have been so bad, had it not been allowed to sit there for a few days.

Re: Fecal Impaction, 4 days Post-Op

The bowel prep for me has been the worst part of this experience so far! And for that, I'm thankful! I hope things get "moving" for you soon! Miserable enough to not be able to have a BM, but to add surgery on top of it..,,

Glad you heard back from them! Was thinking about you!
