Re: Fecal Impaction, 4 days Post-Op

I had issues with not being able to have a BM after surgery too. I had a LAVH on 3/7. I took the laxatives and colace (2xday), it helped with only one small BM. I have found making a smoothie with white grape juice, orange, strawberries and some fat fee sherbert to help me move my bowels easier. I know that grape juice is a good one to give to infants and children when constipated. I started drinking the smoothies twice a day and since I started I have had a bowel movement every day with no issues. I haven't taken any laxatives or colce for the last 4 days. I cannot promise that this will take place of the laxatives but if you try it, I hope it works.

Re: Fecal Impaction, 4 days Post-Op

My experience was similar, with my first BM on the fourth day. They had been giving me stool softners twice a day up to that point. It was very hard. Couldn't go again until I got home on the sixth day and "relaxed". Well, I had also stupidly taken a stool softner when I got home and then went several times a day for like 2 days. Slightly painful, but very loose. I think all the softners caught up with me. I'd try a otc stool softner if your doctor okays it. Also, try coffee. That is what has kept me regular...

Absolutely true, and it can occur even if you do a bowel prep before hand, meaning even for those who do a prep the bowels may not work well following surgery and any food taken in may not go through the digestive system as quickly as usual.

BTW-- it's probably a good idea to bowel prep before surgery b/c, as I said, I believe this was a problem before the surgery, just exacerbated by the surgery.
No woman should do a bowel prep unless ordered to do so by her doctor. It can actual endanger her health for surgery and doesn't necessarily eliminate post surgery bowel issues.

In my case, I had bowel issues when I was required do a prep, none for the surgeries when I didn't have to do a prep.

Also, I am one who cannot follow a high fiber diet no matter how much water I drink. It causes bowel issues every time. So if your diet pre hysterectomy wasn't a high fiber one, you might want to cut back a bit.

Follow the instructions given you and definitely call back if things don't improve!

in there!

Re: Fecal Impaction, 4 days Post-Op

Since we're talking BM's .... I have found that my system is more sensitive now. Previously I would go every other day or so. Now I am going every day, often twice! That's new! I find it hard to get used to ... My husband is like 'so what?' just so different for me .... But everything is coming out okay - my area down there is still pretty sensitive, sometimes feels like I have bowling balls coming out down there! But no ... Just regular poops ... Sorry if this is too much info!

Re: Fecal Impaction, 4 days Post-Op

Thanks so much for your advice (all of you!)

Hopefully, this thread'll help someone else with a similar issue.

A good friend told me she had the same problem I did after her tubal ligation and was in tears when it happened.

I was able to use the restroom again earlier. I still didn't feel completely finished, but at least it was something. I will feel less anxious about it when it is less of a struggle.

Re: Fecal Impaction, 4 days Post-Op

I liked the smoothie idea. Will try soon!

My diet before wasn't really high in fiber. I had no problem with bowel movements, unless I was high on anxiety.

Jeszucs: I'm jealous. My tummy looks huge right now from what I haven't passed. =/

Re: Fecal Impaction, 4 days Post-Op

Bunnistar - I realized as I was typing how ridiculous complaining about going too much would be .... I am anxious about going back to work etc. And I'm sure that is part of it. Relax and give yourself a chance. I took prescription stool softeners for 4 weeks to help keep things soft. And it's still sore at times to go, I really feel it. And I am sometimes finding that happy medium of how hard to push, sensitive down there! I have backed off high fiber also, but I am 8 weeks out and going ok. It's a change and it just takes time to figure out again .... I am thinking it will be a few months before I find a new normal. You will get there ... Your tummy is swollen from surgery too! Mine is still swollen at some point during the day. Mostly at night if I've done too much or sat too long.

Re: Fecal Impaction, 4 days Post-Op

I'm anxious to heal as well b/c only have 17 days of work that I can miss before I start getting docked pay. I just couldn't wait because I was bleeding way too much and it was interfering with everything.

I sure hope I get to that point quickly. I just want to fast forward and be healed already so I can begin enjoying my life like I couldn't for the last 2 years.

Re: Fecal Impaction, 4 days Post-Op

I agree the bowel prep was the worst. Even with that, two stool softeners a day, a pro biotic and lits of water have left me with the same problem of bowel impactment... my dr said its the pain meds so i am down to just two a day from six... i am 10 days post op and my pain is manageable barely on two but the pain of not going or straining to go is just as bad

Re: Fecal Impaction, 4 days Post-Op

I had my DvH on February 17th. I had an extremely solid (and painful) BM on the 4th day post op and then not another one until five days after that! That one was really solid at first and then really soft (almost too soft - sorry tmi) for the rest of that night. I think it was definitely building up behind the 'barrier', but not really blocked. Since then I have been taking Colace and drinking prune juice regularly. I can't say that I am regular, but at least they are fairly soft and manageable now. I was told not to take Dulcolax because it causes your bowels to contract and would be very painful, but Colace is just a stool softener.

Good luck to you and I hope things get moving really soon.
